Snowbird Activities

Imagine starting off the New Year with an ice—I mean nice—cold dip in the Gulf of Mexico. I’ve imagined it for years, and I still don’t think I could do it. But come Saturday, January 1st, the “polar bears” of the south will be doing just that at the Annual Polar Bear Dip at the Florida/Alabama line. The snowbirds from up north may consider the Gulf Coast warm this time of year, but my skin will have to be significantly thicker to handle a January swim in the Gulf!

But I have heard that it’s an exhilarating experience, albeit cold, and it’s just one of several winter activities that the visiting snowbirds may enjoy. Snowbird men’s coffee clubs and card games are held weekly in the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area, as well as senior events such as softball and potluck lunches. There are also state-specific snowbird clubs. You can check out some ongoing and upcoming events here; the events calendar at OrangeBeachToday.com also lists some winter events.

Golf Groups and Condos

The new driver was an excellent Christmas present, but even better was the phone call from one of my annual golf trip buddies. It was questionable whether he was going to be able to make this year’s trip to Gulf Shores, but he managed to work things out and has guaranteed that he will be there.

His addition will make for a nice group this year, which makes me even more grateful for Brett/Robinson’s condos and golf packages. The condos are such an ideal setting for a group of friends. The multiple bedrooms and fully furnished kitchens make it easy to live with several other people for an extended amount of time. Then of course there are the amenities: pools, hot tubs, tennis courts (a nice complement to golf), and, at some locations, the putting greens, which are much appreciated when it comes to a golf getaway.

And with nine golf courses to choose from, customizing a golf package to fit the needs of our group is easy, and the deals are phenomenal. Plans are already under way for this spring’s trip—this should make for a much more tolerable winter.

New Year, New Condo

It’s been a long time since I’ve actually wished for something for Christmas. I feel slightly childish, but there is something particular that I’m hoping for: a Brett/Robinson gift certificate. I can think of no better gift than that of the beach (which is why I am actually giving this very gift to my parents this year).

And I know exactly how I’ll use it (if I do get one). In honor of the New Year, I will book a stay at a new condo—the Phoenix West. It’s the newest of Brett/Robinson’s Phoenix properties, and I have yet to stay there. I’ve heard it’s pretty amazing: fully furnished condos, indoor and outdoor pools, lighted tennis court, hot tubs, saunas, and, my favorite, a lazy river with a water slide. Gift certificate or no gift certificate, I will be checking out the newest condominium in 2011.

Visit Brett/Robinson’s website for more information on this and other properties.

New Year's Eve

There is no place I’d rather start the New Year than on the Alabama Gulf Coast. For anyone who has this same idea in mind, you really should check out The Wharf’s New Year’s Eve Block Party, complete with dining, live music, and a midnight fireworks display.

The music starts at 5:00 p.m. with Lee Yankie and his soulful R&B tunes. Next up is The Rez at 7:30 p.m.—oldies, rock, and the Top 40. Finishing up the night is Fuego’s Motown and oldies.

Plus there’s still time to take advantage of one of Brett/Robinson’s specials—stay five, six, or seven nights and one night is free, or stay for ten nights and only pay for seven. Start the New Year with a rockin’ party and a hot vacation deal!

Valentine’s Day and Easter…Already?

I went to the store today and saw Easter candy. Yes, those creamy little eggs are already out in some stores (or at least in my store) even before the Christmas fudge has been baked. Part of me was shocked, and part of me thought longingly of Easter and spring weather. And yet another part of me was hungry for chocolate and bought the candy.

Even closer than Easter is Valentine’s Day, and though I didn’t see any candy or other merchandise for this holiday, I do know of one worthy purchase for Valentine’s Day weekend: Lulu’s and Brett/Robinson’s Vow Renewal Celebration. The package is $298 per couple and includes a two-night stay at the Phoenix All Suites Hotel, a gift basket and flowers, a vow renewal ceremony on Saturday, February 12th, and breakfast at Lulu’s on Sunday, February 13th. The package is valid for stays between February 12th and February 14th.

It’s the perfect Valentine’s Day getaway. Visit Brett/Robinson’s website for more information.

Winter Golf Packages

Golf is the best pastime no matter what time of year. I can think of several benefits of playing golf in each season. For winter, I can think of two main reasons: the weather and the deals.

Yes, I said the weather. I enjoy playing in the cooler weather—such a change from summer’s heat. And the “cold” weather along Alabama’s Gulf Coast doesn’t compare to what people experience further north. I’ll take 50 over 15 any day!

Then there are the deals, particularly Brett/Robinson’s lower rates on golf vacation packages. The two sample packages they offer—the Masters and Championship golf packages—quote the lowest per person/per night rates during winter ($100 for the Masters package and $86 for the Championship package). Even if you don’t love winter, you have to love those prices!

Of course, you can also customize your golf package to fit your specific vacation. Just visit the Brett/Robinson website for more information.

Order Some Grits!

Christmas parties and parades, Santa Claus events, holiday concerts—these are all excellent events that make me love this time of year and the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area. (Santa vs. the Snowman at the IMAX was also pretty awesome.)

But if you really want to get into the southern spirit of Christmas, check out Cinnamon Grits: Christmas in the South on Monday, December 13th at 7:30 p.m. Whether you’re from the South and can appreciate an entertaining tribute to southern holiday traditions or you’re just visiting and would like a humorous glimpse of how it is down here, you’ve got to check out this foursome of Girls Raised In The South.

The show is at the Erie Meyer Civic Center in Gulf Shores. Click here for more information and to buy tickets.

Gulf Coast Gospel Showcase

‘Tis the season for good will and inspiration, and thanks to the Gulf Coast Gospel Showcase, one particular good will gesture will extend all the way into April 2011.

The Gulf Coast Gospel Showcase is a series of gospel concerts presented by Lighthouse Gospel Productions of Romar Beach Baptist Church in Orange Beach. The concerts will feature several well-known gospel singers from around the country and will benefit the Gulf Coast Disaster Relief Fund. The concerts begin this Friday, December 10th, and will run periodically through April.

For only $10 (or $20 for VIP tickets—rows 1 through 10) you can help support the Gulf Coast and enjoy some inspirational music by some very talented artists. Tickets and more information are available at LighthouseGospelProductions.com, or call 251-981-8966.

Think Free

This is a proud day for me: it’s still November and I’ve managed to finish all my holiday shopping. Not only have I finished, but I’m actually pretty pleased with the gifts I found this year. My favorite is the Brett/Robinson gift certificate I bought for my parents—I can’t wait to see their reaction.

Gift-buying is bitter sweet for me. I enjoy it, but it always leaves me a little light in the pockets—a common problem among many shoppers. Fortunately, if you’re visiting the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area this time of year, there are plenty of activities to enjoy that cost little or even no money: walking the beach (still very doable this time of year), hiking and biking nature trails, driving along Alabama’s Coastal Connection, and even just enjoying the view from your condo balcony.

Plenty of ideas are listed on OrangeBeachToday.com under “Explore Our Coast.” Check out the calendar of events too for a variety of events taking place this fall and winter.

11/23/2010

Thinking of 2011 Already

So the biggest shopping day of the year is this Friday. Hundreds (thousands?) of shoppers will line up at the doors of their favorite stores before they’re even open in hopes of grabbing some hot items for some great prices. Ordinarily, I avoid any shopping on this day at all costs—I tolerate Cyber Monday and its online deals much better.

But weekend passes to next year’s Hangout Music Festival will already be on sale on Black Friday—for only $50. You can get them at The Hangout starting at 8 a.m., as well as at Private Gallery locations in Orange Beach, Foley, and the Eastern Shore.

And here’s another bonus: starting Thanksgiving Day, you can get 15% off a vacation with Brett/Robinson for any time between December 1st, 2010 through December 31st, 2011. The deal ends at midnight on Friday, November 26th.

Not trying to rush through the holidays, but I’m really starting to look forward to next year!

11/19/2010

The Holidays Are Here!

I am not afraid to admit that I love a good holiday activity—and I am so stoked about the “Santa Vs. the Snowman” movie at IMAX! This isn’t your typical Santa story—this is Santa and the Snowman going head to head on a snow-filled battlefield. And you’re watching it on the IMAX screen. It’s a whole new level of awesomeness.

This is just one of several holiday events going on in the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area. Several Christmas tree lighting events will be taking place, and Santa will be paying a visit to Tanger and other festivities. You can check out all the holiday happenings at Brett/Robinson’s OrangeBeachToday website.

Gift Certificate

Not to sound like a kid, but I know exactly what I want for Christmas this year: a Brett/Robinson gift certificate. These gift certificates are good toward accommodations at a Brett/Robinson rental property. They don’t apply to golf (which of course was my first thought), but that’s okay—the money saved using a gift certificate could go toward a round or two of golf (or more, depending on how generous the giver is).

As nice as it would be to receive one, giving one would be just as sweet. It’s an excellent gift idea—you can use any amount, any time of year. My parents are due for a nice vacation, and I think a gift certificate might be just the thing to get them to finally plan one. Who knows, maybe they’ll be grateful enough to let me tag along. The three of us would make an excellent trio out on the golf course. I hear the greens of the Gulf calling my name!

11/16/2010

Toy Drive

‘Tis the season for giving, right? I tend to get bogged down with thoughts of gift buying and giving. It isn’t that I mind gift giving—when I get it right and manage to give someone something he actually wants and/or needs, it feels really nice. Then there are those times when I just don’t know what to get for certain people. I end up getting them a gift just for the sake of giving a gift, and they do the same for me. And it always leaves me wondering: what’s the purpose?

Then along comes a toy drive to put me back into the spirit of purposeful giving, such as the toy drive being facilitated by Phy-sique Fitness in Gulf Shores. All you have to do is bring new, unwrapped toys to the facility, and you’ll have made a significant impact on the quality of a child’s holiday season. That’s the kind of giving that feels good.

11/12/2010

Relaxing with Sports

Like many people, I like to relax while on vacation. Yes, lounging on the beach and floating down the lazy river are major components of my relaxation regimen. But too much lying around starts to have a reverse effect on me—I go completely stir-crazy. I have to have some form of physical activity.

The more opportunities for sport activity a condominium offers, the better: tennis courts, basketball, racquet ball courts, and exercise rooms are all amenities offered by several of Brett/Robinson’s properties, and they make excellent stress releases. I generally like to start my vacation days off with an energetic game of tennis or a vigorous workout, then remove myself to a lounge chair on the beach to enjoy the sounds of the Gulf. I can hear the waves calling me already!

11/11/2010

Blue Angels

The Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show is taking place this Friday and Saturday, November 12th and 13th, at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola. If you’ve never seen the Blue Angels before, I highly recommend this event. Maybe you’re an expert on everything aircraft-related, or maybe you would just be in complete awe of the air acrobatics that take place during this show. Either way, it’s an event worth checking out. In addition to the air show, there will also be food and beverages, a kids’ zone, a Sony Playstation II gaming area, and bungee jumping.

Gate admission is free, and bleacher seats cost $5 per person. And if you really want to enjoy your stay in the area and save some money, take advantage of Brett/Robinson’s current Blue Angel’s special: save $80 on a two-night stay or $202 on a three-night stay. There’s still time to take advantage of this deal, but it’s only valid until November 11th. Visit the Brett/Robinson website for more information, and book that trip!

11/05/2010

Holiday Shopping

I can’t believe Thanksgiving is only three weeks away! Which means a break from school is only three weeks away, then just a few more weeks of school before another break. We have officially entered my favorite time of year. I think it’s time to start getting into the spirit of the season with a little early Christmas shopping!

I love shopping in the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area. The weather is mild right now and ideal for window shopping. And there are so many types of stores to choose from: art, jewelry, clothing, gift shops, antique stores, and much more. It’s a perfect setup for all the family and friends on my shopping list—they’re a bit of an eclectic group!

I’ll be getting started this weekend. I have lots of people to shop for, and it wouldn’t hurt to start putting together my own wish list!

11/03/2010

Golf Course History

As much as I enjoy golf, I don’t get to do much with the sport, like attend PGA tournaments and other big golf events. And that’s ok, because I do play fairly often and I’d really rather play than watch.

But I think this is why I tend to gravitate toward playing on golf courses that have some sort of “history”—courses where noteworthy golf events have taken place. And there are several in the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area. For example, Perdido Bay and Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club have hosted local PGA events, Cypress Bend at Craft Farms hosted the Alabama Women’s State Championship for eight years, Timber Creek hosted the Alabama Open in 2003 and 2004, and Glen Lakes has hosted Futures Tour events. Somehow, playing on the same courses that great golfers have also played on makes me take a little more pride in my game, almost as though I’m picking up the good “golf vibes” they left behind.

Find out more about these and other golf courses at the Brett/Robinson website—and check out their golf packages while you’re there!

11/02/2010

SEC Soccer Tournament

I love sports. I love to play them, I love to watch them. And it doesn’t matter much what sport it is—if there is physical movement and competition of some sort, I’m game. (Unless it’s synchronized swimming—I just can’t get into that one.)

Being able to attend a live sporting event is even better. So I was glad to hear that while I’m getting a little rest and relaxation at Island Winds East in Gulf Shores this weekend, I won’t be too far from the live soccer action taking place in Orange Beach.

The 2010 Southeastern Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament will be taking place at the Orange Beach Sportsplex from Wednesday, November 3rd to Sunday, November 7th. This is a single-elimination tournament between the top eight teams in the SEC. The team that wins the tournament will get the SEC’s automatic bid to play in the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship.

Soccer is a great sport—non-stop action—and these ladies will be motivated to play hard! The cost is only $5 per adult ($2 for students). Check it out if you’re in the area!

A Buddies Reunion

There’s talk of a “buddies reunion” among some of my old college friends. It’s been years since all of us have been able to hang out together, and my former college roommate called me last week and suggested we organize a small reunion. I agreed and, of course, suggested we make it a beach reunion.

Now I have a reason to rent a beach house through Brett/Robinson. It’s been a while since I’ve gone the beach house route; condos usually suit my vacations better (plus I’m not usually willing to give up all the amenities). But now we’re talking about a group of about seven formerly rowdy guys who will be attempting to revisit their youth—I think the privacy of a beach house is necessary this time. With no neighbors to disturb and a portion of the beach to ourselves, it should be a solid good time!

10/27/2010

Sausage Festival

There are three reasons this Saturday is significant. First, it’s the day before Halloween, which means there will be lots of Saturday night pre-Halloween parties.

The second reason is the Original German Sausage Festival in Elberta from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is especially significant if you love sausage—this festival has the best you will ever taste. The town’s founding fathers developed the recipe for this tasty sausage, and you can only get it there. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it! There will be baked goods in addition to the sausage, as well as arts and crafts, live music, carnival rides, and a Bier Garten that features a large selection of imported beers.

The third reason Saturday is significant is it’s my mom’s birthday—and I’m terrible at mom gifts. She’s a fan of festivals, though, so I think a mother-son trip to the Sausage Festival may be in order.

10/22/2010

Accommodations

Golf is obviously a major factor when planning a golf getaway. Striking the right balance between cost, challenge, and scenery that fits your personal preference is important when choosing which courses to play.

But it’s not the only thing that determines the success of the getaway. Where you stay has the potential to make or break the vacation. Again, finding the right balance between cost and luxury is important, as are factors such as distance to golf courses—is driving a long distance to play golf worth your while, or would you rather be close to your destination? Amenities play an important role, too: hot tubs and pools offer relaxation opportunities after a long golf game, and access to a putting green is an excellent way to warm up your game before heading out.

Brett/Robinson’s various condos offer many golf-related advantages: they’re close to exceptional Gulf golf courses, several have putting greens (and other amenities), and, of course, the company offers golf packages.

Visit the Brett/Robinson website for more information.

10/21/2010

Weekend Fishing Trip

So the fall snapper season has been open (on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays) for a couple weeks now, and I haven’t been out there fishing yet—this fall semester has kept me pretty busy, even on weekends.

But that’s changing this weekend. I’m clearing my schedule and hanging with a good friend who’s visiting with his family for the weekend. And you guessed it: we’ll be hitting the Gulf with our fishing rods. They’ve booked a six-hour fishing trip and invited me along. Can’t wait!

I’m so glad this extra season was added. Fishing along Alabama’s Gulf Coast in the fall is an awesome experience. If you haven’t made plans to be here, you have until November 21st (season ends at midnight on the 21st). So get planning!

10/19/2010

Calling All Inner Children

I don’t care how old I get, Halloween is still fun. The house is already decorated with ghosts and pumpkins, my costume is ready to go, and I’m just waiting for the parties to begin.

In and around Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area, the parties will be starting up soon enough. The Uptown Foley Halloween Party takes place on Thursday, October 28th in the streets of downtown Foley—games, face painting, and of course a costume contest are some of the activities that will go on.

Then there are a number of events taking place Halloween weekend. Stop in at the 12th Annual Halloween Celebration at NAS and walk through the haunted CH-37 Mojave helicopter. The Magnolia Corn Maze will transform into a haunted maze for the weekend. And LuLu’s Homeport Marina will also have a haunted house on Halloween night.

Call up your inner child and have some fun!

10/15/2010

Take a Tour

I was sitting around the other day, dreaming of my next vacation and browsing Brett/Robinson’s Orange Beach Today website when I discovered that of all the things I’ve done along the Alabama Gulf Coast, I’ve never taken a tour.

In particular, I’ve never toured from the air. And there are a couple ways to do this in the Gulf Shores area. One is by plane—or biplane. The Bird of Paradise biplane rides fly you and a friend (or just you) over Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, along the Bon Secour River, over Mobile Bay…pretty much all over the place. A hot air balloon ride is another aerial option, and there are a couple places in the area that offer this.

And while on the subject of alternate transportation, I’ve also never taken a ride on the Wales West Railway, which travels around woods, wetlands, a lake, gardens, and Victorian-style buildings. Too bad I won’t be there to try it out this month—I hear the train and park are completely decorated for Halloween right now.

10/12/2010

Something New

I like trying new things concerning vacation, but I rarely want to give up a visit to the Gulf. The Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area is my favorite place to vacation. Period. I’m not usually willing to spend vacation time elsewhere.

But I have yet to stay at Brett/Robinson’s newest property, Phoenix West, which means I’ll get to try something new without sacrificing my favorite getaway spot.

And I know this place is going to be awesome: fully furnished three- and four-bedroom condos, indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, saunas, and a lazy river with a water slide (love those lazy rivers!). Can’t wait for the new experience!

10/08/2010

October Fun

So I’m heading out to the Magnolia Corn Maze with some friends this weekend. This is maybe my favorite October activity. There’s just something about wandering through the meandering, corn-stalk-lined paths that screams autumn. The hayrides are fun, too—they make me feel like a kid again!

I may have to make a return trip at the end of the month. That’s when they do trick or treat in the maze, and they’ll have a haunted maze and haunted hayride. I love October and all of its “scariness”!

There are a number of fun Halloween-type events going on at the end of the month: the Uptown Foley Halloween Party, the 12th Annual Halloween Celebration at NAS, and the 3rd Annual Howl-o-ween Spooky Pooch Parade and Costume Contest (you have to love pets in costumes!). The Pumpkin Patch Express is also worth checking out—you get candy with your pumpkin.

10/07/2010

Nature at its Best

So it won’t be much longer and the leaves will be changing. In fact, the trees in my backyard are already showing signs of change, with a couple red leaves here and there. Fall is here, and it’s a great time of year for nature.

If you’re looking for a scenic and relaxing autumn drive this season, you might check out Alabama’s Coastal Connection, which was just ranked as one of the 50 most comfortable touring drives by Goodyear. And with good reason—the Coastal Connection passes through beaches, wildlife preserves, towns and historic sites. The nature is incredible, and there are many interesting places to visit and learn about the Alabama Gulf Coast along the way.

10/06/2010

A Perfect Time to Visit

There are so many reasons to visit Gulf Shores and Orange Beach this month. The Shrimp Festival starts October 7th, the Bon Jovi and Brad Paisley concerts take place October 15th and 17th, Thunder on the Gulf is from the 12th to the 17th, and then there’s golf—which is just about the best activity you can undertake on the Gulf this time of year. The best part: Brett/Robinson has deals to accommodate all of this.

Stay four nights and pay for three during the Shrimp Festival and Thunder on the Gulf, or get a 20% discount on three nights during Thunder on the Gulf. You can also extend your vacation and get three free nights—a deal that applies to stays to the end of the year.

And, of course, there are the golf packages. Customize your own or choose the masters or championship golf package, which includes one round of golf per day for three days. Visit the Brett/Robinson website for more information.

9/30/2010

Season of Romance

Couples seem to enjoy fall. There’s something about the seasonal cool-down that really warms up romance. It’s a popular time of year for romantic getaways and weddings. It’s also an ideal time to take advantage of Brett/Robinson’s romance vacation package.

Packages can include a gourmet basket with your choice of beverage, dinner for two at the Sunset Cork Room in Gulf Shores, and a private boat cruise with Triple “C” Charters.

These packages are an excellent way to enhance time spent with your special someone—they also make great gifts (weddings, anniversaries, etc.). Visit Brett/Robinson’s website for more information.

9/29/2010

Songwriting Festival

A good friend of mine is a songwriter—an “unrealized great songwriter,” as he jokingly refers to himself. He’s written several pieces for fun but has never known what to do with them. Lucky for him, the 26th Annual Frank Brown Songwriters Festival is taking place November 11th to 21st.

The festival creates an opportunity for both seasoned and aspiring songwriters to have their music heard. Musicians will perform at various venues along the Gulf Coast. Even if you’re not a songwriter, you can hang out and listen to a mix of Grammy-winning artists and the potential stars of tomorrow. Most of the concerts are free; some may charge a cover.

Now to convince my friend to muster up the courage for a live, on-stage performance. Who knows, he may be able to change his status to “well-known great songwriter.”

9/26/2010

Within Walking Distance

I’m not really a big fan of driving. I don’t like dealing with other cars and drivers, using up gas (and paying for more), and hunting for parking spots. The worse is when you’ve just spent hours in the car driving to your vacation destination and then have to drive all over the place to do anything outside of the hotel/condo.

That’s one of the reasons why vacationing with Brett/Robinson is so great: some of the properties are so close to downtown Gulf Shores that if you do have to drive, you don’t have to drive far. Island Winds East and West in particular are within walking distance of shopping and restaurants—which is convenient when you feel like having a drink (or two or three) with dinner, or if you conveniently forgot to bring last year’s bathing suit and need to run out really quick for a replacement.

Island Winds is also a favorite location for the Shrimp Festival coming up on October 7th – 10th. Hurry up and make a reservation!

9/25/2010

A Fall Golf Vacation

One thing I really look forward to about fall is the golf. Autumn along Alabama’s Gulf Coast presents the best conditions for putting around the golf course—still warm, but without the extreme heat.

It’s also an excellent time of year for booking a golf vacation. Fall is such a fun, active time in the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area, the weather is ideal—why not take advantage of a Brett/Robinson golf package? The variety of condos they offer and the selection of golf courses in the area make it easy to put together a perfect personalized vacation package.

Packages include greens fees, cart fees, and condo rental. Check out Brett/Robinson’s website for more information.

9/24/2010

Ferris Wheel

I had completely forgotten how much I love the Ferris Wheel at The Wharf. Crazy as it sounds, I haven’t been on it in a couple years. Guess I thought I’d outgrown it! Which is completely crazy—how can you outgrow the tallest Ferris wheel in the southeast?

A group of us decided to take a ride on it the other night, and I’m glad we did: there’s nothing quite like the view you get at the top of this thing, looking far out above the trees and across the Gulf. And night is the best time to ride, when it’s all lit up. Amazing.

I have a renewed appreciation for the sight of this landmark now. Don’t think I’ll wait so long before my next visit!

Three Nights Free

It may officially be fall now, but it doesn’t feel like it yet, and I still find myself longing for summer activity. I’m already missing last season’s adventures and looking forward to my next getaway—and it’s going to be a good one.

Thanks to some saved up vacation time and Brett/Robinson’s three free nights deal, I’ll be spending a whopping ten days in Gulf Shores. Ten days of beach napping, lazy river riding, and red snapper fishing (oh yes, I will be there for the fall snapper season). And the best part: I’ll only be paying for seven days. That’s one of the specials Brett/Robinson is offering—stay ten nights, get three nights free. Check out their website for more information.

Let the countdown to fall vacationing begin!

9/23/2010

Slo-Poker Run

It seems like the older I get, the busier I get, and lately I haven’t had as much time to spend with my family (yeah, now I can appreciate the lecture I got from my parents on this topic a few years back). Any opportunity for all of us to hang out is golden, and the Slo-Poker Run on Saturday, October 2nd is one of those opportunities.

There are so many reasons why I’m looking forward to this: it’s a family event (as I mentioned), it takes place on a boat (a pontoon boat, specifically), and it benefits the Children’s Miracle Network. Basically, you travel by boat to at least five of ten designated stops to try to get the best five-card poker hand. And the person who comes in first place will get $750 (there are other prizes, too). Of course, you won’t win anything—and you won’t be having nearly as much fun as the rest of us—if you’re not there. So be there.

9/17/2010

Condo Deals and Shrimp

It’s almost that time of year again in Gulf Shores: time for kicking off the fall season with delicious food, live music, and several other activities. It’s the 39th Annual National Shrimp Festival, and it’s less than a month away now.

The four-day event, which runs from Thursday, October 7th to Sunday, October 10th, features fine arts and crafts from over 200 vendors, a retail marketplace, and lots of seafood fresh from the Gulf. Two stages present a continuous flow of music from both national recording artists and local musicians.

And then there’s the Children’s Activity Village, with educational activities, carnival rides, arts and crafts, and free popcorn and snow cones—lots to keep the kids entertained!

Attending the festival is already free, but if you’re looking to save a little more (extra money to spend on that perfect original art find), stay with Brett/Robinson for all four nights and only pay for three nights. Book your stay online and get an additional 20% discount!

9/14/2010

The Big Picture

Those of us who love the Alabama Gulf Coast can appreciate the importance and brilliance of nature and its preservation. The area is home to its own amazing array of plant and animal life. So it’s very fitting—and very exciting—that the international See the Bigger Picture photo exhibit, which has visited various cities around the world, is opening at the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center.

The exhibit features 28 photographs taken by children around the world, each representing biodiversity. Plus, the artwork of three local children will also be on display, representing the biodiversity of the Gulf Coast. Everything will be on display in the Exploreum’s courtyard, complete with plants native to the Gulf Coast area.

It’s a great chance to observe both local and worldwide biodiversity in an artistic setting. The exhibit is open from September 25th to November 21st. Be sure to make an appearance!

Alabama Kayak Adventures

There are many reasons why I enjoy kayaking: the freedom of guiding the kayak through the open water, the exercise, and the thrill of exploration, to name a few. It’s also a nice social opportunity, if you go on a kayaking tour.

One of Brett/Robinson’s vacation packages is the Alabama Kayak Adventure package, which includes kayak excursions for up to six people. This is a great way to explore the nature and coastal wildlife of Alabama’s Gulf Coast—dolphins, osprey, herons, and even manatee are some of the creatures you might come across during a tour. The tours are guided, so you’re sure to hit some nature hot spots and learn a little something about the Gulf Coast.

Fitting In with Golf

The great thing about golf these days is anyone can do it: men and women, old people and young people, the wealthy and the not-so-wealthy. It fits in with pretty much any lifestyle…and any vacation style.

However you layout your vacation plans, you can likely fit golf into the equation, if you want to. (And if you’re visiting the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area, you will want to.) Obvious examples include the “mancation” and buddies’ trips—golf is almost always considered a priority among men. Planning an activity-oriented getaway? Golf is an excellent activity to add to the mix. Trying to keep things low-key and relaxed? Many people consider golf to be the ultimate relaxation pastime. Girls’ getaway? Exercise that girl power on the golf course!

Tie it all up with a Brett/Robinson golf package and you’ve got a nicely planned vacation (and an official vacation-golfer status).

Thunder on the Gulf Returns!

Oh yeah, I can already feel the adrenaline rush. Thunder on the Gulf is back! It’s been a couple years, but the excitement of this event hasn’t left me. And now I’m focusing in on one particular week: October 12th to the 17th.

This is when the race boats will make their way to Orange Beach and wow us with some amazing Gulf racing. And not to mention the parties, getting to meet the racers, awards ceremonies, and more parties.

If you’re in the area during that week, you have to check out Thunder on the Gulf. If you’re not in the area…get in the area!

Bon Jovi and Brad Paisley

I was a die-hard Bon Jovi fan as a kid, and I think it’s great how he’s still performing today. Lately it seems like he’s been popping up all over the place, and on October 15th he’ll be popping in at the Gulf Shores Public Beach for a free concert.

It’s part of the Concerts for the Coast series to help raise awareness of the Gulf Coast. Another music great, Brad Paisley, will also perform that same weekend on Sunday, October 17th. Both concerts are free but still require tickets.

So if you want to enjoy a couple great concerts and be part of the promotional effort for the area, book a condo or hotel room with Brett/Robinson, whose currently giving free tickets to guests staying at one of their properties the night of the concerts. They have several locations within walking distance of the concert, and their Phoenix All Suites Hotel is located right at the site—so you can enjoy the music from your balcony.

It’s going to be a fun weekend!

For the Kids

I see a lot of families vacationing at the Gulf. It’s such a nice sight: young couples spending some much-needed quality vacation time with their children. It’s the epitome of a “family vacation."

And Gulf Shores/Orange Beach is an ideal spot for these types of getaways. The Wharf has a number of kid-friendly activities, such as the Ferris wheel (the tallest in the southeast), the zip line and ropes course, and the Build-a-Bear Workshop—always popular among young children. Mini-golf is another popular choice, and places like Pirate’s Island, The Track, and Shrimpy’s offer this plus other activities. Often it’s as simple as hunting crabs on the beach, or cruising down the lazy river at one of Phoenix condos (a personal favorite of mine).

If you need ideas on how to keep the kiddos entertained, check out OrangeBeachToday.com, which has a list of “Just For Kids” activities.

Phoenix Rising

I’ve stayed in several of Brett/Robinson’s Phoenix condominiums and have had an excellent experience each time. So I’m really looking forward to the opening of the newest Phoenix property, Phoenix West II.

This place is going to be amazing: 31 floors of Mediterranean-style condos with Gulf-front terraces and amenities like heated indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, hot tubs, saunas, and a lazy river on the beach (the lazy river is the big draw for me).

If you missed the first two Phoenix Rising events, there’s another one taking place on Saturday, September 4th, from 4 to 7 PM at 23450 Perdido Beach Blvd. in Orange Beach. It’s a chance to get a sneak peak at the new building, and maybe inquire about condo sales. They will also have food, live entertainment, and a children’s village. Visit Brett/Robinson’s website for more information.

Music Matters

Music and the beach go together so well…just like peanut butter and jelly (which is also good on the beach at lunch). It’s why I always have my iPod when I’m sunning in the sand, why beach parties are such a hit, and why catching a concert while vacationing at the Gulf is such a fun experience.

And maybe that’s why Brett/Robinson is offering another music concert special—free tickets Hank Jr's Rowdy Friends 2010 Tour in Orange Beach. The concert is September 25th at the Amphitheater in Orange Beach, and you get two to six free tickets depending on how many bedrooms your condo rental has. (More information is available on their website.)

Also coming up is the John Mayer concert on September 6th, and a host of other recurring music events—check them out at the OrangeBeachToday.com website.

Paradise for Sale

I don’t know how many times I’ve thought, as I’m getting ready to return home from a blissful Gulf Shores vacation, that I would love to live there full time—just stay right in one of Brett/Robinson’s Phoenix condos. One day, maybe; retirement has to come eventually.

Of course, you don’t have to wait until retirement to own a condo—or other property—in Gulf Shores/Orange Beach. Purchase real estate with Brett/Robinson, and you can visit whenever you have time and rent it out when you’re not using it, offer your beachfront place as a gift to family members, host the annual family reunion...not to mention you can proudly tell people that you own a part of the Gulf Coast.

And they have a lot to choose from if you’re in the market to buy some Gulf vacation property: condominiums, houses, lots for building, even commercial buildings. Visit the Brett/Robinson website to browse through their listings.

8/13/2010

Labor Day

Labor Day is in our sights, ready to provide us with some end-of-summer relief after we’ve all returned to work and school after a season of “getting away.” That one-day extension of the weekend gives us the opportunity to kick back and have some fun during the last warm days of the year. It’s also a great time to squeeze in one last getaway to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach before fall sets in.

If you really need more incentive than just the prospect of another beach vacation, consider Brett/Robinson’s latest deal: a 20% discount on a three-night stay. The offer is good from now until September 4th, so there’s plenty of time to plan.

Having Dinner In

One thing I really love about vacationing in a condo is the ability to make meals. But I have a love-hate relationship with condo cooking: I love spending a relaxing evening in the condo and not having to worry about getting ready to go out, but I hate cooking. Or rather, I hate preparing to cook. I’m just not good at meal planning. I’m never sure what to make or what to buy to make it.

This is where Brett/Robinson’s Condo Cooking 101 is especially useful. First of all, it provides tips on cooking in the condo, such as using recipes that are simple and low-stress, making meals ahead of time, and taking turns preparing meals with other vacationers in the condo. It also provides some recipes, everything from appetizers and drinks to main dishes and desserts (the crawfish chowder sounds really good).

The purpose of vacation is to relax—meal preparation should be no different.

8/07/2010

Summer Heat

I enjoy the heat—definitely prefer it to the cold—but it’s been testing my limits this summer. It’s certainly been a hot one, and the heat wave looks like it’s going to continue for a while.

The upside is, it’s perfect weather for swimming, a very popular hot-weather pastime—and I’ve enjoyed every moment spent in the water this summer. Pools are obviously a popular choice, and anyone vacationing with Brett/Robinson will have access to at least one (and sometimes more) pool. Depending on where you stay, you might also have the luxury of a lazy river, and even a waterslide—lots of ways to enjoy the outdoors without overheating (just keep the sunscreen handy).

Visit the Brett/Robinson website to browse their various properties and swimming venues.

8/04/2010

A Month of Concerts

I can’t believe August has rolled around already. Soon it will be September, which means we’re coming into the last stretch of summer. If you’re in the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area and you like music, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to end the season with a bang.

First up is the Sugarland concert this Friday (August 6th) at the Amphitheater in Orange Beach. You know it’s going to be quite a show if it’s Sugarland, and anyone who’s been a fan of American Idol for the past couple of years will be intrigued to know that Danny Gokey is one of the two special guests (Little Big Town is the other).

Later this month is the Train concert on August 28th, and then John Mayer on September 6th, both also at the Amphitheater in Orange Beach. Three big concerts within one month—not a bad way to say goodbye to summer! More information about these concerts is available on the Brett/Robinson website.

Vacationing in the Fall

I know we’re only halfway through summer, but the fall buzz has already begun: back-to-school sales, people tiring of the heat and longing for cooler weather, and some stores have even started putting out fall decorations.

For many of us, summer travel is coming to an end soon, if it hasn’t already ended. This thought always depresses me—and then I start making plans for fall trips down to Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

Fall is an ideal time of year for vacationing in this area. First, the weather is excellent—still warm, but without that high-summer heat. Second, you can get great deals on lodging, such as Brett/Robinson’s 20% discount on fall rates when booking online. It’s as simple as it sounds: book reservations online for an arrival date on or after August 15th and get 20% off the fall rate (which is already low).

And, of course, there are plenty of other specials to take advantage of. Check them out here.

Hotel Benefits

People often think of hotels as places “just to rest your head.” And it’s a valid argument—most of the hotels I’ve ever stayed at have been small, one-room lodgings intended only for the purpose of having a place to sleep when you’re traveling and don’t want to spend much on accommodations.

This simply doesn’t apply to Brett/Robinson’s Phoenix All Suites Hotels in Gulf Shores. For starters, the living area is not the main sleeping area (although a sleeper sofa is included if extra sleep space is needed); the rooms come with a separate master bedroom with a king-size bed, as well as bunk beds for kids.

But my favorite thing about these hotels is the full kitchen. I can’t tell you how frustrated I’ve been in hotels where I can’t even keep some cold drinks in the room with me. The Phoenix hotels, on the other hand, offer full kitchens, so cold beverages—and meals in general—are no problem.

Hot Air Balloons

I’ve explored the Alabama Gulf Coast in a variety of ways: walking the beaches, hiking nature trails, driving along Alabama’s Coastal Connection, and simply observing the Gulf from my condo balcony. I’ve seen it from the air, too—in an airplane, which just isn’t the same as flying over in a hot air balloon.

No, that wasn’t just a random comparison. One of the vacation packages available with Brett/Robinson is the Hot Air Balloon Package—you get tickets for a ride in a hot air balloon. First-time flyers (such as myself) get a first-time flyers ceremony. You can also book an exclusive couple’s trip—just you and your significant other. It could make a great anniversary gift.

Visit the Brett/Robinson website for more information about this and other vacation packages.

7/21/2010

Artistic Beauty

Beauty is a major characteristic of Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area. If you think I’m only referring to the beaches, then you’ve never visited the Orange Beach Arts Center—an ideal place for exploring the local aesthetics.

Home to more than 120 local artists, the Center’s gallery features regularly changing exhibits of paintings, pottery, and sculptures. The best part about this type of beauty is it’s for sale—the Arts Center will even ship your purchase to your home.

But one of my favorite things about the Orange Beach Arts Center is the glass artwork. If you’ve never seen glass blowing before, you should check it out; it’s just really cool. And the Arts Center offers various classes that teach you about hot glass casting and how to make glass artwork.

Information about the Orange Beach Arts Center and other museums and galleries is available on the Orange Beach Today website.

7/19/2010

Free Entertainment

I always try to save up for my vacations. At a minimum, I save enough to easily book my Gulf Shores or Orange Beach condo. Then I try to save as much spending money as I can before my trip. And then I try to spend as little of this money as possible.

This is easy to accomplish in the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area. Nature itself offers an abundance of entertainment: strolling the beaches, hiking nature trails like the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail and the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, and picnicking at scenic beachfront parks. Certain museums and historic sites are free, too, like the Orange Beach Arts Center (a good choice if you enjoy glass-blowing), the Gulf Shores Museum, and the Civil War Trail.

The Free & Fabulous sample itinerary on Brett/Robinson’s Orange Beach Today website provides a range of ideas for free things to do. Have fun and save some money—maybe enough for another Alabama Gulf Coast vacation.

7/15/2010

That Perfect Souvenir

I developed a habit as a kid where every time I took a trip somewhere, I had to find the perfect souvenir. For years, sand castles, sharks’ teeth, and those small bottles of sand with tiny seashells constituted “perfect” souvenirs in my mind.

Now that I’m older, I’ve (mostly) outgrown my childish taste for silly little trinkets, but not my desire for souvenir shopping. Fortunately, the Alabama Gulf Coast has lots of options when it comes to shopping. San Roc Cay is a personal favorite—I’ve found everything from cool beachwear to artwork. The Wharf is also a great shopping spot, and you can’t beat the window shopping experience along the quaint streets of Fairhope.

Brett/Robinson’s Orange Beach Today website lists several shopping options under the “Shopping Daycations” itinerary. With all the choices, it’s easy to find that perfect souvenir—even if it’s a tiny bottle of sand.

7/13/2010

Beach House

It’s been a while since I vacationed in a beach house. I have to say, I really enjoy the condo experience: pools provide a nice alternative to ocean swimming and are a great place to meet other people, and amenities like tennis courts, putting greens, exercise rooms, and saunas are fun distractions. Not to mention the lazy rivers at several of the Brett/Robinson properties—it doesn’t get much better than that.

But beach houses, though they may not have the amenities of a condominium, offer their own vacation benefits. They’re more private, they present a more home-like setting, and they can accommodate large groups of people. I’ve spent week-long family reunions where every bed in the house was full. It made for some truly entertaining memories.

If you’re interested in renting a beach house in the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area, check the options offered by Brett/Robinson here.

Bellingrath's 75th Anniversary

On Wednesday, July 28th, Bellingrath Gardens and Home will celebrate its 75th anniversary. If you want to learn more about the home and its architecture, that’s the day to visit.

Of course, it’s a great place to visit any time. What’s not to love about a 10,500-square-foot home built in 1935? The original furnishings and a variety of gardens over a 65-acre estate make this a beautiful and fascinating historical site.

July’s a great time to visit, with the variety of colorful flowers blooming. And let’s not forget that it was designated as the “Top Public Rose Garden in the United States” in 2004 by All-America Rose Selections.

Bellingrath is just one of many attractions along Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

6/22/2010

Tennis Anyone?

It seems like so much focus is placed on golf when it comes to resorts. For good reason, of course—golf is a great game, and the course options along Alabama’s Gulf Coast are both plentiful and beautiful.

But golf isn’t the only great resort sport, and several of Brett/Robinson’s condos offer an alternative for the active-minded: tennis. It’s great exercise, it’s fun, and tennis courts are one of the amenities covered by the cost of a rented condo, so no additional spending is necessary. Phoenix IX in Orange Beach even has an indoor, climate-controlled tennis court on the 12th floor of the building, so you can play tennis while looking out over the Ole River and Ono Island.

If you really want to get that sport-oriented resort feel, you can do both tennis and golf (and, depending on where you go, racquetball and basketball and workout in the fitness room). Then take a relaxing steam in a sauna after all the activity.

The Brett/Robinson website has more information on condos and their amenities—check it out here.

The Cannon

One of the great things about visiting historic sites and museums is getting a glimpse into the past and seeing what things were like way back when. What’s really neat is when there are actual objects from a certain time and place—things you can look at and think, “People from a long time ago used this very thing.”

So it’s pretty cool that one of the cannons from the Confederate raider CSS ALABAMA is now on display at the Museum of Mobile. The two-and-a-half-ton cannon sank with the rest of the CSS ALABAMA in 1864 in the English Channel, and will eventually be the centerpiece of a 700-square-foot exhibit. I can’t wait to go see this thing and imagine the battles it’s seen!

The Museum of Mobile is located at 111 South Royal Street. You can call 208-7569 for more information.

Get Romantic

There seem to be a lot of wedding anniversaries this time of year. For about the past month I’ve seen Facebook posts announcing anniversaries at least once a week, and I know more are coming.

It’s understandable—spring/early summer is an ideal time for having a wedding and going on that long-anticipated honeymoon. Romance is in the air!

Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, honeymooning, or just spending a romantic getaway with someone special, Gulf Shores/Orange Beach is an ideal location, and Brett/Robinson’s romance vacation package can add a nice touch to your stay. A gourmet basket and dinner for two at the Sunset Cork Room in Gulf Shores are included in the package.

Brett/Robinson has a variety of vacation packages to choose from—click here to learn more about them.

6/13/2010

It's Cookout Time

One of my favorite things about summer is cooking out. Ever since I was a kid, when my dad would breakout the charcoal (you gotta love the smell of charcoal), cooking out on a grill has been one of my most beloved summer time activities.

It’s a convenient and easy way to make dinner, too, and is particularly useful on “eat in” nights during a vacation. Just buy some burgers, steaks, or chicken (or all three), toss them on the grill and let them cook while you enjoy the evening outdoors.

Barbeque grills are just one of many amenities offered at Brett/Robinson’s properties. Visit their website to browse the available condos, hotels, and beach houses.

6/10/2010

Free Fun

It can be fun to splurge while on vacation, particularly in an area like Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, where there so many worthwhile ways to spend money (golf and drinks at a bar being a couple of my favorites). But we all have a financial limit, so knowing where to find free fun is a good idea.

Hiking and biking are popular activities, and the nature trails along Alabama’s Gulf Coast are excellent places for nature and wildlife observation. There are many parks in the area that are good spots for picnics and just hanging out. And if you enjoy history, the Civil War History Trail makes for an interesting—and free—outdoor experience.

Of course, if you booked your vacation with Brett/Robinson, you don’t have to go far to find free activities. Pools, saunas, tennis courts, and fitness centers are some of the amenities guests can enjoy.

6/05/2010

Father's Day

It’s time once again to think about what to get Dad for Father’s Day. In my experience, dads are some of the hardest people to shop for. They seem to have everything, and they aren’t vocal about what they do need or want.

So I’m not even going to bother asking mine this year. He’s simply going to get a weekend in Gulf Shores at Brett/Robinson’s Phoenix All Suites or Phoenix All Suites West. Two nights for $388.50, which includes a “Dad’s survival kit”—men’s travel case, snacks, a Sports Illustrated magazine, and the all-important beer. And for a little extra, I think I’ll throw in a round of golf. Should be a pretty good weekend.

Click here to check out this and other hot deals offered by Brett/Robinson.

An Ideal Nature Hike

There’s a lot to be said for a good nature hike. Walking along a trail among the rich flora and fauna, observing wildlife in its element can do wonders for a troubled mind, or may simply be a source of tranquil entertainment for an individual, couple, or family looking for a good time.

The Hugh S. Branyon Back Country Trail is one of the best settings for a nature walk that I’ve ever come across. This 10-mile trail meanders through four different ecosystems in Orange Beach, and is on the National Scenic Byway. If you enjoy walking, running, rollerblading, biking, or bird-watching, this is a great trail to explore.

Brett/Robinson’s Orange Beach Today website has information on this and other nature attractions throughout Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

5/26/2010

Summer Fun

It may not officially be summer yet, but school is coming to an end (if it’s not already over in some places), which means summertime family activities are beginning. And if your kids are like most, you’ll find the amusement parks in the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area to be a big hit.

The water park at Waterville USA opened on May 22nd, and will be open daily—not just weekends—starting May 29th. With the hot weather of the Gulf, this is refreshingly fun excursion for people of all ages, with waterslides and rides for the youngest of kids to the oldest of “kids.”

For some dry fun, you could check out The Track in Gulf Shores and Adventure Island in Orange Beach: sky coaster, bungee jumping, go-karts, miniature golf, and laser tag are some of the diversions at these locations.

Check out these and other attractions here.

Pay for a Few Nights, Stay a Few More for Free

Getting one free night at a beachside condo is a great way to save money and extend a vacation. Getting three free nights is even better. Brett/Robinson is currently offering both.

From now until July 31st you can five, six, or seven nights and one of those nights will be free. Or, if you have the time and really want to immerse yourself in your Alabama Gulf Coast vacation, you can stay for ten nights and only pay for seven.

My vacation budget was maxed out at seven nights—glad to know I’ll be able to stay for ten! This will give me plenty of beach and pool time and time for exploring the area sites.

Learn more about this and other deals here.

Hot Tubs and Saunas

I’ve always found strange that one of the things I look for when booking a vacation is whether the condo or hotel has a hot tub and sauna. Particularly when I’m vacationing on the Gulf—it’s already really warm. Why is there this compelling need to soak in a hot tub?

The only answer I can come up with is, it’s just nice. It’s relaxing. And probably for the same reason that I enjoy lounging on the toasty beaches of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach in the first place: I just like being warm. (Plus, I sometimes like to revert back to my childhood when I would run back and forth between jumping in the pool and warming up in the hot tub—except I don’t actually run and jump anymore.)

Hot tubs and saunas are common amenities at Brett/Robinson’s many rental properties. You can learn more about these properties and their amenities here.

5/19/2010

Golf Hazards

I love a golf course with hazards. And I love that they call them “hazards” and not just “challenges.” I’ve played with people in the past who complained about golf course hazards, and one person in particular who even wishes water hazards were called “water challenges” instead—but that just doesn’t sound like golf to me.

My favorite is “scenic marshland hazards,” a description of the Rock Creek Golf Club in Fairhope, Alabama. This just sounds amazing to me—scenic, but with an element of risk. I guess that’s why I like hazards. They add a level of risk to the game (even if it is just the risk of losing a ball).

Rock Creek is just one of many first-rate golf courses along the Alabama Gulf Coast, so you’re bound to find one that fits your hazard (and challenge) criteria.

5/18/2010

LuLu Palooza

If you’re looking for some money-saving fun for Memorial Day weekend, I have a couple good ideas. First, take advantage of Brett/Robinson’s Stretch your Memorial Weekend offer, where you can stay five nights for the price of four.

Then while you’re in the Gulf Shores area, check out the 6th annual LuLu Palooza on Sunday, May 30th at LuLu's at Homeport Marina. Live music and a fun atmosphere, with performances by Coconut Radio, Grayson Capps & the Stumpknockers, Ilo Ferreira, and The Radiators—and of course LuLu’s delicious food. Best of all, it’s free (the concert, not the food).

With the extra vacation time and saved money, you can explore other attractions and entertainment outlets in the area, or just relax and enjoy the beach and resort amenities.

5/14/2010

Night Life

We’re all well aware of things to do during a day at the beach. (And anyone familiar with the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area knows that there are many other activities and sites to enjoy away from the beach.)

But when the sun starts to set in the evening, I know I’m not always content to just call it a night. Whether it’s dinner out, or a concert, or drinks and live music at a bar, I like to have options for my twilight plans. So I’m finding Brett/Robinson’s Music & Nightlife events calendar to be particularly useful, as it provides a calendar of music and evening events going on around the area.

You can check out this and other features of the new site here.

5/13/2010

Celebrating New Beginnings

I always enjoy being part of something new—especially when food and entertainment is involved. So I’ll likely attend the celebration taking place at the construction site of Phoenix West II, Brett/Robinson’s newest (and biggest) Phoenix resort.

Not only will there be food and live entertainment (as well as a children’s village for the youngsters), but guests will also get to explore the new condominium. I’m considering it a sneak-peek at a future vacation!

The party is scheduled for Saturday, May 29th from 3 to 7 p.m. in Orange Beach. Visit the Brett/Robinson website for more information.

5/06/2010

Importance of Ratings

There’s something about knowing that someone else agrees with me that is so satisfying. It’s not that I need approval that what I think is “correct”—and certainly not when it comes to golf. I know whether or not I enjoy playing a particular course. I know that Kiva Dunes and Cypress Bend in Gulf Shores are both excellent golf courses based on my own experience.

But it’s still nice to know that others think the same, especially when those “others” are the Golf Digest folks. Both Kiva Dunes and Cypress Bend have been ranked as top golf courses by Golf Digest. Somehow it adds to my enjoyment when I play those courses. It’s Golf Digest, after all—those people must know what they’re talking about regarding anything golf.

Both of these golf courses, as well as several others, are part of the golf packages offered by Brett/Robinson. Check them out here.

It's Almost Music Fest Time!

The first day of the Hangout Beach, Music and Arts Festival is just a little more than a week away. If you haven’t already made plans to attend, there’s still time to book a room at a Brett/Robinson property.

The Phoenix All Suites Hotel and the Island Winds and Island Winds West properties are right in the middle of where the action will be. Staying onsite will be the best way to enjoy this music fest—you’ll have the option of being on the beach with all the festivities or listening to the music from the balcony of your hotel/condo.

Phoenix All Suites is offering music festival packages, and guests who stay at one of the Island Winds condominiums can save 20% off of three nights or stay four nights for the cost of three.

Memorial Day Deals

We’re coming up to one my favorite holidays: Memorial Day. The long weekend, so alluringly close to summer, is always a perfect occasion for celebration (as evidenced, for me, by all the couples I’ve known over the years to marry on Memorial Day weekend—if I’m not celebrating an actual wedding, I’m celebrating someone’s anniversary).

It’s also a great opportunity for a vacation, and Brett/Robinson is making that opportunity even more attainable. Up until May 31st, you can stay at a Brett/Robinson property for five nights at the cost of four nights. Now that’s how you stretch and already lengthy weekend!

And what a way to celebrate—cooking out on the white-sand beaches of Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Or take some of the money you save and enjoy dinner out at one of the many local restaurants.

Check out their website for this and other hot deals.

Plan Some Off-the-Beach Time

When we think of a beach vacation, we tend to envision activities like lounging on the beach with a good book and an iPod, building sandcastles, perhaps playing a little beach volleyball, and then cooling off in the ocean waters and maybe catching a few waves. These are all excellent beach activities, particularly when your destination is the white-sand beaches of the Alabama Gulf Coast.

But there is such a thing as too much of a good thing, and the last thing you want to do is burnout on beach time. In addition, in an area like Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, Alabama, where there are so many things to do and see, it’s hard to justify spending the entire trip solely on the beach. Taking time for some off-the-beach pursuits and exploring the local culture can really enhance the beach experience.

One popular pastime for many beach-goers is golf, which is no short-coming in and around Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. The area offers a variety of scenic golf courses, and visitors can often find deals that will help save them money. Brett/Robinson Vacation Rentals, for example, offers golf vacation packages where guests can save on multiple rounds of golf.

Nature excursions offer additional opportunities for off-beach adventures. Nature trails and centers, wildlife preserves, estuariums, and zoos are some of the ways visitors can explore the plant and animal life native to Alabama’s Gulf Coast. The area is also a good location for fishing, whether it’s pier fishing or via charter boat.

Those interested in history and culture should plan to visit historical sites, such as museums and old homes and churches, and attend concerts and art exhibits of local artists.

Knowing ahead of time what sites of interest are near your accommodations, or booking accommodations based on what off-beach activities interest you will help with the travel planning process. Brett/Robinson offers a selection of lodging options located near several area attractions.

Attention Rick and Bubba Fans

This Friday, April 30th, is going to be quite an entertaining morning at The Hangout in Gulf Shores. The Rick and Bubba Show will be broadcasting live from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. (CST).

Anyone who’s listened to this show knows what a comedy trip these two are, and to add to the fun, animals from the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo will make an appearance and Lisa Christian will perform live during the show. The comical crew will also be interviewing representatives from the Alabama Gulf Coast CVB and The Hangout Beach, Music and Arts festival.

The public is invited to attend the broadcast. Brett/Robinson’s Phoenix All Suites Hotel and both of the Island Winds properties are really close to The Hangout, so if you happen to be staying there this Friday, you’ll be in a good position to go check it out.

Get Lazy

The countdown to my first vacation of the year has begun. The weather is warm (and even warmer at the Gulf), and life has gotten a little too hectic lately. To say I’m ready to make the trek down to Orange Beach is an understatement. And when I get there, I’m not going to relax—I’m going to get lazy.

Because there is nothing more relaxing to me than letting a nice cool current carry me along while I gaze up at the sky and at the palm trees lining the path of the lazy river (which is what’s carrying me, of course). I always look forward to my trips around the lazy river. I’ll be staying at Brett/Robinson’s Phoenix West, which pairs a water slide with its lazy river. So if I get a little too lazy, I can make a run down this winding slide.

Brett/Robinson’s Phoenix on the Bay and Phoenix on the Bay II also feature lazy rivers.

Commune With Nature

There are so many things to do and see in the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area; some cost money, some are free. For those who are trying to save a little money (and here I raise my hand emphatically), free is always a good option to have.

Nature trails and wildlife observations are a personal preference for me, and the Alabama Gulf Coast has some amazing nature and wildlife. The Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge is a 6,000 acre preserve with hiking trails, lots of wildlife, and free admission. The Biophilia Nature Center is another option, with a butterfly nursery, carnivorous plants, and a giant alligator—and only a $5 donation for admission.

Both locations are within easy driving distance of Brett/Robinson properties. Learn more about these and other nature excursions here.

Putting Greens

Even though we consider golf to be a leisurely activity, for many of us it brings out our most competitive characteristics. No matter how “leisurely” I tell myself any given golf game is going to be, I always play with a particular goal in mind: to beat my lowest score.

And there’s no vacation from this competitiveness. If it’s golf, it’s competition—even if only against myself.

So I love to take advantage of the putting greens that are available at many of the Brett/Robinson properties. I find that my short game needs the most work (not that my long game doesn’t), so practicing on the putting greens is a good warm-up. Plus it truly is relaxing and makes a nice addition to an already enjoyable golf vacation.

Visit the Brett/Robinson website for more information about their luxurious golf vacation packages.

Plenty to Do at Phoenix on the Bay

A well-rounded experience makes for a well-enjoyed vacation, and this is why I enjoy Phoenix on the Bay in Orange Beach. First, because this condo is located at Terry Cove on the Bay, it’s a prime spot for boaters. The property has its own marina and rents boat slips, which makes it so easy to access the Gulf right from the condo.

Second, it’s really close (just a few miles) to the Wharf Amphitheater—meaning it’s really close to concerts. And the Wharf hosts some amazing concerts.

This is in addition to Phoenix on the Bay’s indoor and outdoor pools, lazy river, tennis courts, putting green, hot tub and sauna. You’re not missing out at this place.

Check out the virtual tour and other information about Brett/Robinson’s Phoenix on the Bay.

A Good Cause

What do people who spend a night camping out and walking around a track have in common? Quite possibly they’ve had cancer, know someone who has had cancer, or survived cancer.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is an event where teams of people take turns walking or running around a track or path for up to 24 hours. The continuous walking signifies the fact that cancer never sleeps, and the event raises money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.

Brett/Robinson is a proud supporter of Relay for Life. On April 8th, the Brett/Robinson Relay for Life team held a fundraiser golf tournament at Craft Farms and managed to raise a nice chunk of change—$11,000 to be exact.

Hats off to the Brett/Robinson Relay for Life team!

Mother's Day

I have always struggled with the process of coming up with gift ideas for my mom. Many factors play a role in this decision: the gift should be meaningful, something my mom would enjoy but that I can afford.

So I am completely excited about Brett/Robinson’s latest vacation special—the We Love You Mom package. Visitors can stay at the Phoenix All Suites Hotel (arriving either May 7th or May 8th) for two nights for only $154.29 per night. Also included is a bouquet of spring flowers in the room and a $50 shopping spree at Tanger Outlets.

I, of course, will accompany my mom on this little excursion. Now I have to decide if I want to invite the rest of the family to be in on the gift. It could make for a fun little family reunion, and the other option for this package is to stay at a condo and still get the flowers and shopping spree for an extra $80.

Reservations need to be booked by May 5th to take advantage of this deal, so start planning!

Three Days of Fun

We’re a little more than a month out from The Hangout Beach, Music and Arts Festival. If you love music and the beach, this is the event for you. There’s still time to book accommodations with one of Brett/Robinson’s properties—the Phoenix All Suites Hotel, Island Winds East, and Island Winds West—which are right there where all the fun will take place.

It’s a three-day event (May 14th, 15th, and 16th), which coincides nicely with Brett/Robinson’s minimum three-night stay for festival site accommodations. Since it’s an inaugural event, it will be pretty cool to look back and know you were part of the first festival if this thing takes hold and becomes an annual affair.

Easter sunrise in the gardens of Bellingrath

Easter Sunday, I marked two items off of my list of things I have not done. I attended an Easter sunrise service and visited Bellingrath Gardens and Home. This was accomplished all at once.

We got up around 4 a.m. and were out of the house by 5 for the drive to Theodore, Ala., south of Mobile. An hour later, we parked under the massive live oaks in the parking area of Bellingrath.

It was still dark and we were told to follow the lighted path. We couldn’t see much around us in the darkness but the scent of flowers was surrounding us. The lights on the path and volunteers stationed along the way, kept us moving in the right direction. We reached the house and folding chairs were set up facing a makeshift stage and a wooden cross adorned with Easter lilies. We chose our seats and wiped the moisture off with a towel that was provided. It wasn’t long until most of the seats were occupied and a few people were standing behind the seats.

The service started at 6:30 a.m. and sunrise was at 6:38. It was a little foggy, so we were not able to see the beauty of the dawn, but the setting around us more than made up for it.

After the service, we took a path towards the Fowl River. I had my camera and around every turn, I found something to take a picture of. The colder-than-normal winter delayed the peak of the azalea blooms this year which worked to our advantage. Instead of catching them near the end of the season, the colorful array of blooms was just getting started.

We walked the Bayou Boardwalk first. The cypress trees were intermingled with flowering trees making for an unusual combination rising from the dark gray mud. We made our way to Mirror Lake and the beauty of spring unfolded as we followed the flower-lined path. Although the sky was still gray, the azaleas and trees were bursting with color. The air was still, so the lake was truly a mirror, reflecting the glorious colors of the surrounding grounds.

We walked through the Fountain Plaza, the Grotto, the terraces and around the house. The Southern Belle was leaving the dock for a tour of Fowl River, so we watched as it made its way around the bend of the river. We didn’t see everything that morning, but what we did see was amazing. It left me with a hunger to return to see the rest. I did take 150 pictures before we headed back to Mobile and across Interstate 10 to Baldwin County.

Bellingrath Gardens and Home first opened to the public year-round in 1934. It is in full-bloom with camellias in the winter, azaleas in the spring, roses in summer, chrysanthemums in fall and Magic Christmas in Lights during the holiday season. For more information on what is in bloom, the gardens and events, visit www.bellingrath.org.

I can’t believe it took me so long to visit. I will definitely go back soon. Next time, I will add to the experience by taking the ferry from Fort Morgan to Dauphin Island.

The Little Things That Count

Small, interesting features always intrigue me, and those concerning golf are no exception. My favorite feature about Cotton Creek at Craft Farms, one of the many golf courses Brett/Robinson can set you up with, isn’t its Arnold Palmer design or its full-service clubhouse. It’s the mango-scented ice cold towels they offer.

We all know just how brutally hot it can get out on the course. A cold drink is nice, but doesn’t always do the trick; a cold towel will. And mango-scented—for me, nothing is more “beachy” than mango. The only other thing that could be more refreshing would be to jump into a cold pool with a tropical drink in hand. And since that’s not an option during a game of golf, I’ll take the cold towel hands down.

There are a number of golf courses in the Alabama Gulf Coast area, each with its own set of characteristics. Book a golf vacation package with Brett/Robinson and discover what your favorite course and feature is.

A Vacation Night Saved is a Vacation Night Earned

Spring is finally here: trees are in bloom, the weather is warm, department stores are fraught with summer clothing and the summer-spending fever has hit. Many of us are already revamping our warm weather wardrobes, and we have two important questions to answer: where do we wear this new wardrobe, and how do we save money after our spending spree?

The Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area is an excellent choice. There’s something about the pristine, white-sand beaches that makes wearing a new bathing suit that much more invigorating. Then later on you can sport some stylish fashion while checking out the local night life.

As for saving money, check out the hot deals on the Brett/Robinson website when booking your vacation. Deals include free night specials, which range from 20% off of 3 nights to “10 for 7” deals, and specialized vacation packages. Spend the extra money on one of the many area attractions (or do some more beach shopping!).

No Need for Improvement

Golf always makes my beach vacation better. Not that a vacation along the Gulf Coast needs much (or any) improvement—golf is more of an enhancement. I love the game, I love trying out new courses and re-visiting old favorites. And it’s a great way to spend quality time with certain family members (or escape family altogether for a little “me” time).

Brett/Robinson golf vacation packages make interspersing golf throughout my vacation that much easier. The packages are personalized and include green fees and cart fees for multiple rounds of golf, as well as accommodation expenses. Everything is already planned by the time I arrive at my vacation spot, so all I have to do is check in, relax, and play golf.

So Many Options

Having options is a necessary and important part of vacation planning: where visit, when to go, what to do—the possibilities can seem endless. Maybe the most important decision to make, once you’ve figured out where and when, is what type of accommodations.

Hotels and condos can be fun, with their pools and other amenities. Houses, on the other hand, offer a more personal, private feel. The right choice varies from vacationer to vacationer, and Brett/Robinson Vacations offers many choices.

A couple planning a last-minute Gulf getaway will do fine with a simple one-bedroom hotel room at one of the Phoenix All Suites hotels, whereas a family planning their annual retreat may need the convenience of a rented beach house. Or for a middle-ground option, vacationers may choose a condominium—Brett/Robinson offers many selections of this type.

Start planning your next trip to Alabama’s Gulf Coast with Brett/Robinson.

Work It at the Beach

We call them “getaways” for a reason: they’re our chance to get away from our everyday lives, an escape from work, monotony, and, for many of us, dieting. Part of the fun of being on vacation is getting to eat the things you normally don’t get to eat—particularly in the Alabama Gulf Coast region, where there are so many delectable restaurants and local flavors to choose from.

You could just let loose and resolve to lose the weight once you get back home. You could also vow to stick to your diet. Or you could book a fitness package and have the best of both worlds.

Brett/Robinson offers packages that involve working with a personal trainer during your Gulf Coast stay, allowing you to work off those extra calories. The fee is $35 for individual sessions and $50 for partners.

Call 1-800-497-6238 to book a fitness package; click here for information on additional Brett/Robinson vacation packages.

AAA Members can save this month at Tanger

The vivacity of spring makes it hard to resist a good shopping spree, and the beautiful Alabama Gulf Coast has one of the best places to shop just a few minutes up the road. Whether you need a new bathing suit or you’re looking for furnishings for your beachside condo, you can find almost anything you are looking for at The Tanger Outlet Center in Foley.

For the month of April, Tanger is offering a great deal for members of the American Automobile Association (AAA) to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their partnership. All you have to do is register your visit at the Tanger Shopper Services Center and you will receive a Tangerstyle 20% off Spring Bonus Savings Sheet.

I’ll be headed that way to get my discount. New summer clothes, swimsuit and sandals are on my list. It is a great way to start the beach season.

Nature Tour Video!!

An eco-adventure on the water

I had been looking forward to this day since mid-winter. The weather was warm, the sun was shining and I was going kayaking. Not just any kayaking, but an eco tour with a guide. How much closer to nature can you get than in a long, narrow fiberglass boat literally inches above the water? I loved it.

I never have tried to kayak before and neither had my co-worker, Jill. I knew Captain Chris and Laurel of Alabama Kayak Adventures would take care of us.

We met our two guides at Pirate’s Cove at 1 p.m. The temperature was hovering just below 70 degrees and there was a bit of a breeze so I kept my light jacket on. When all the kayaks were off the truck and in the water we picked one and climbed in. I chose a yellow one and Jill sat down in the shorter mango-colored one. Chris and Laurel went over the basics and safety information and gave each of us an orange whistle to blow in case of emergency.

Chris gave us a little shove off of the beach and we were floating. It only took a couple of minutes to get the hang of paddling the craft around. The kayak was comfortable and light-weight and pretty easy to maneuver. We started our five-mile adventure heading west across Stone Quarry Bayou. While everyone was perfecting their paddling skills, Chris told us a little folklore about the channel markers being in stone under all that sand. And, speaking of sand, he explained the reason our sand is so white is because it is quartz that washes down the rivers from the Appalachian Mountains.

We headed across the cove and into the Intercoastal Waterway, hugging the shoreline as we rounded a point. I looked up at the trees and saw two osprey cruising the sky above a nest. One had a fish in its talons. Soon we glided into the smooth waters of Ingrams Bayou. A little ways in, it was time for a break. We found a sandy beach and slid the kayaks in so we could stretch our legs. The cool water and soft sand felt good under my feet as I walked around the edge of the shoreline. When I walked back to my kayak, I noticed a hermit crab scavenging for food. Chris and Laurel talked about some of their adventures while kayaking the area and how the land on each side of the bayou is privately owned, so it is undisturbed.

When we were moving again, Laurel called out that she heard a dolphin. I looked ahead and saw a dolphin splash the water near the shoreline. We all sat still and watched for a few minutes hoping they would come back, but they were moving away from us.

We crossed the stream and entered a tributary surrounded by tall saltwater grass. In places, the grass was bent over where deer, raccoons, fox, wild boar and even bears make their way to the water. A little ways in, we reached the estuary (where fresh water meets salt water) and the grasses were a mixture of salt water and fresh water and then only fresh water. Laurel pointed out an alligator nest and we looked at the different plant life surrounding us. The trees were budding and wild flowers were pushing their way up through the damp ground. I knew the place would be even more beautiful in the coming weeks.

As we weaved our way back towards the mouth of Ingrams Bayou, we spotted the dolphin again. This time we could see three of them and they weren’t too far away. They crossed in front of me and headed toward Chris. He said they came beside him just under the surface. One was swimming on its side and he said it looked like a white ghost passing him. Watching the dolphin swim and play at their level was magical.

It was a great trip. No one had to blow the little orange whistle. I loved the kayaking and the guides were fabulous and informative. I am ready to go back when the weather is a little warmer and more sea and land creatures are swimming and roaming the shorelines.

Brett/Robinson offers packages with Alabama Kayak Adventures. The price is only $35 per person (minimum age 10) for approximately three hours of fun and learning about our coastal habitat and the creatures that inhabit it.

The Hangout Beach, Music and Arts Festival

I think most people would agree that the beach, particularly along the Gulf Coast, is an ideal place to be in May. Throw in some live music and a festive atmosphere and you’ve got quite a party—or The Hangout Beach, Music and Arts Festival.

This is a first-time event that will take place May 14th, 15th, and 16th on the beach, next to the Hangout in Gulf Shores, and will feature more than 60 musical artists—including some Grammy Award winners (view a complete list of artists here). Bring a friend or two, a group, or the entire family. It’s a great opportunity to have fun on the beach and enjoy an assortment of music.

The best way to enjoy this festival is to never have to leave. Brett/Robinson vacation properties are available onsite, so traveling to and from doesn’t have to be a concern. Go to the Brett Robinson web site for more information.

Picture This

It is a beautiful day on the Alabama Gulf Coast. You and your family just checked in to one of Brett/Robinson’s fabulous properties and you are ready to hit the pools and beaches. You have everything you need for your beach vacation including your most important tool, your camera.

When you get home, you want to be able to remember every detail of every fun moment. Capturing memories is so much easier today in the age of digital cameras. All you need is a digital camera, memory card and batteries and you are good to go.

Here are some tips to make sure you take home some great photographs.

  • Cameras and sand do not mix. Be very careful with your camera on the beach. Just a little sand can make a camera inoperable. Always have your camera in a water/sand-proof container when it isn’t in your hand. A zip-close plastic bag or a six-pack cooler make good camera protectors.
  • For the best lighting when taking pictures of your family, hit the beach in the “magic hour” just before sunset or just after sunrise. The softer light compliments skin tones and you do not have to fight the harsh shadows of the mid-day sun.
  • If you want to take pictures during the day when the kids are building sandcastles, swimming in the pool or playing in the surf, use a fill flash. Most cameras have the option of having the flash operate on each picture. Using the flash will fill in shadows on faces and offset some of the light reflecting from the white sand and water.
  • If you want some group family shots, dress everyone in a similar color (white shirts and khaki or denim pants/shorts are nice) and go to your chosen location about an hour before sunset. I recommend doing this on your first or second day at the beach while everyone is still fresh and before someone gets too much sun.
  • Don’t forget, the beach isn’t the only place the family is having fun. Keep your camera with you on excursions to go cart tracks, mini golf or when dining out. Our fun restaurants have a lot of places for picture opportunities, too. Even a trip to souvenir stores in Gulf Shores can produce a family picture in the mouth of a shark or under the tentacles of a purple octopus.
  • Please be careful of the dunes and sea oats on our beautiful beaches. They are protected areas. They prevent beach erosion and serve as a buffer between the Gulf of Mexico and the properties that line the beach. They also add to the beauty of the area. When photographing them, please do so from the boardwalks or walking paths.

The main thing to remember when you have a camera in your hand is to have fun. When you are having fun, you are taking fun pictures. That is what memories are made of.

Sheepshead Fishing

Orange Beach has long been known as one of the premier areas on the Gulf coast for offshore fishing. Many have forgotten or just don’t know how awesome of an inshore fishing that we have.

In the spring of the year as the water starts to warm up sheepshead, a black and white convict striped fish that can steal a shrimp without the slightest hint to the angler, spawn in the inshore and near shore waters of Alabama. After they spawn, the ravenous fish can be caught around the inlets, jetties and piers on live shrimp and fiddler crabs. For what they may lack in beauty they sure make-up for in their stubborn fight and they are quiet delicious as table fare. This is a fairly easy fish to locate (any structure from a piling to a pile of rocks will hold these fish in the spring).

Sheepshead are a great fish to target with your children as they do not require specialized equipment. The same tackle that you use for bass fishing will work quite nicely. No long offshore runs are required; just a short trip to the Perdido Pass Bridge or the jetties, and let the fun begin.

PS….As a bonus while you are trying to catch a sheepshead, don’t be surprised to find a red fish or a pompano on the end of your line.

Thanks to Capt Brad Johnson with Triple C Charters for taking my wife and daughter inshore fishing. Hope you enjoy the video.

Springing forward

Daylight saving time is here. It is the wonderful time of year when it seems the sun shines a little longer on a beautiful day. For me, it means more time to spend outside and more beach time with my family. Daylight saving time also makes it easier to be on the beach at the break of day and the setting of the sun.

I am a photographer and my favorite times of day are just after sunrise and the hour before sunset. The light at these times of day is perfect. It is hard to describe what I feel when I am on the beach with my camera in the afternoon as the sun sinks low on the horizon. There is a magical change in the colors. The light softens and the sugar-white sand reflects some of the colors of the sky. The Gulf water transforms from a sparkling green-blue to a glowing turquoise, to deep cobalt as the sun sets. Standing in the soft white sand and watching this transformation takes my breath away.

Mornings are just as magical. When the sun begins its ascent and trickles of light reach out to hide the stars, the perfect time of soft light returns for the camera lens. Once again, I am left breathless as I watch the breaking of the day and feel the Gulf breeze on my face.

On your next visit to the beautiful Alabama Gulf Coast, schedule some time to be on the beach for the “magic hour” at sunrise or sunset. I bet it will leave you breathless, too. Don’t forget your camera.
