FloraBama - the past revisited

Seriously, who among us hasn't spent some time at the legendary FloraBama.? You know the place, sitting squarely on the Florida - Alabama line, just a quick walk from Phoenix X. The 'Bama is clearly the most legendary watering hole in this area. Mrs. Beachin' and I found ourselves there this past Saturday night to meet up with some friends. Needless to say, it brought back some great memories of our days of frequenting the place. Some of the memories are cloudier than others. I'm sure you understand. It's good to see it's still a great place for kids of all ages to enjoy some great music, good friends, cold drinks and good times.

See you on the Beach!

Christmas Shopping with Beachin' Brett

Christmas Shopping at the Cobb, baby!!

Wat up people?? I’m lovin’ the holiday season, but, shopping for the females can be difficult sometimes. It wasn’t that bad for me this year, because I got almost ALL of it done at the Pinnacle Cobb Shopping Center here in Gulf Shores. On County Road 4, its only a 5 or 10 minutes ride to the beach and the Hangout. Its got everything you could possibly need for a vacation!!

I got there and went straight to the girl store mecca; Kay Jewelers. But, I did that last year, so I just left. Next, I went to Kay Jewelers’ back-up as the girl store mecca; Bed, Bath and Beyond. I’m still surprised I left with my masculinity in tact. I had to escape!!! Nothing that a quick stop in Hibbett Sports can’t solve!!! Books-A-Million didn’t have anything, but Target did!! Hard to believe this is all in the Pinnacle Cobb Shopping Center, right?? Plus, there are restaurants EVERYWHERE. Longhorn Steakhouse, Cold Stone Creamery, Incredible Candies (locally owned), Starbucks, Indigo Joe’s Sports Grill and Bar, and the works!! Plus, they’re expanding!! A new sushi shop just opened recently, so there’s something new for ya!! I’m out, gotta shop for another Beachin’ Family tradition I’ll tell ya about on my next blog. Keep it cool!

Bass Pro Shop

Beachin' Brett and I took the short ride to the Bass Pro Shop store in Spanish Fort. For any outdoor activity - fishing, hunting, camping, boating - you name it - they've got everything you could ask for. They feature a huge aquarium filled with the fish found naturally in this area. If you're looking for a hunting and fishing supplies and can't find what you need please let me know. They even have a really good restaurant right in the store - The Fish Company Restaurant.
It's an amazing store, and a short 30 minute drive from our house. It's well worth it.
See you at the Beach!!

New Year's Eve with Beachin' Brett

New Years Eve Partay!!!!!!
I’m sure if you’ve seen any of my previous blogs, you’ve heard of the multi-attraction Wharf in Orange Beach. They always have a big New Years’ Eve blowout which I have gone to every year, but this year’s looks better than every other one before it. This year, they have two separate music acts planned to perform until we hit 2009, for no charge!! (gotta love free concerts!!) The planned music acts are country musician John Stone and the Motown musical act Crystal Clear.
The Block Party officially starts at 7, but you will probably see people there partying earlier than that. We gotta bring in 2009 right!!

This year’s New Year’s party promises to be the best ever, and I especially am looking forward to the firework show. It was awesome last year and I expect it to be even better this year. I can’t wait to count down the dropping anchor.
Keep it cool people!

December Fishing Report by Capt. Randy Boggs

Inshore the red fish have been biting quite well on cut bait, live bait, and trolling with spoons. Quite a few sheepheads have shown up around dock pilings and have been surprisingly large, at 4 -6 lbs.

There has not been much action on flounder. Speckled trout are being caught in Mobile Bay on the shell bars and around the rigs with live croakers being the bait of choice for the larger trout.

Offshore in the 110’ to 120’ depths the vermillion snapper are plentiful. They are being caught on cut squid. If you are on a small boat with a just a few people, try cutting cigar minnows in to ½” pieces using a small hook to get the them biting.

Lots of catch and release of red snappers are being reported on the wrecks.

There have been good catches of king mackerel being reported. Most of these fish have been in the 20 lb plus range around the larger artificial reefs and oil rigs.

There have been no reports of wahoo or dolphin. The yellow fins are biting around the offshore rigs - trolling, chunking or jigging. There are good catches of black fin being reported around the rigs, especially jigging at night with diamond jigs.

Beachin' Brett at 3 Doors Down

Gotta Love Rock Concerts!!!
Wat up people?? I recently went to the 3 Doors Down, Switchfoot, and American Bang concert with my dad, Beachin’ Bob, and it ROCKED!!!!
We got there a little late, so we only caught the last two songs of American Bang, and they were awesome. I’d like to see them again in 5 or 10 years when they can go on a tour of their own and not have to open up for someone. Switchfoot was pretty good, but it wasn’t exactly smooth. I say that because Switchfoot’s lead singer Jon Foreman tried to jump up and bust a move on Chad Butler’s (Switchfoot’s drummer) drum set, but he missed the bass drum and knocked over his crash symbol and his tom-tom!! It was hilarious!! He didn’t try that one again!! Smooth move!!
3 Doors Down came on after Switchfoot, and the first thing I noticed was that the 3 Doors Down drum set had stairs leading up to it, so I said, “Hopefully he doesn’t pull a Foreman.” It was after that that I realized I accidentally made a That 70’s Show reference, which was awesome, cuz I love That 70’s Show!!
But 3 Doors Down rocked it, and they played a 3 song encore, which was sweet.
But man, the Wharf Amphitheater at the Wharf in Orange Beach, where this concert was held, is always having good acts coming through. We’ve already had Hank Williams, Jr., Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Kid Rock, Three Days Grace, Seether, Staind, Saliva, and many more!
When you make your visit to Gulf Shores, take a break from the beach and get yourself some tickets to the next concert. There are concerts pretty much twice a month, at a minimum. The Wharf website will surely give you the hook-up on the next few music acts coming through.
Well, that’s it for me, I’ll post again soon, see ya’ll at the Party!!

Getting Ready For Christmas

It’s time for the Beachin’ family’s annual Christmas excursion to the Tanger Outlet Mall in Foley. It’s a great place to shop, with over 120 brand name outlet style stores. They’ve got it all, from Calvin Klein to Nike, from Brooks Brothers to Black & Decker, and all points in between. It’s a one stop shopping experience for all the needs of Beachin’ Brett and Robinson, as well as a fine selection for me and the boys to get some nice things for Ms. Beachin’. And what about for me? Well, I’ve got it all already, but if you must Las Vegas Golf & Tennis has some nice “big boy toys”. Don’t forget to visit their web site and print out some coupons for really nice savings.

Coming soon, the Christmas plans revealed for Beachin’ Bob and the whole extended family.

Phoenix West Now Open!!

I just heard that Phoenix West is now accepting daily, weekly and monthly rental reservations. The Beachin' clan can't wait to be one the first to stay at the newest of the Brett Robinson condominiums. It's a magnificent structure of 27 stories of the most luxurious condos on the coast. The glassed in parking is perfect for housing the Chevelle during our stay. This building has great amenities including heated indoor/outdoor pools, fitness room, a sweet color TV in each bedroom, a lighted tennis court and much more.
I'll be watching the SEC Championship with a perfect view of the beach this Saturday.

As always, See You On The Beach!!

Thanksgiving on the Beach

Here’s the recipe for an epic Thanksgiving:

Fried Turkey (a Beachin’ Bob special, injected with Cajun butter), macaroni & cheese, cornbread dressing, gravy, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, baby lima beans, rolls, cream style corn, cranberry sauce, a boat load of sweets highlighted by home made chocolate pie.
All of this followed by a short nap.
Then the Annual Beachin’ Sand Bowl, a hotly contested sand football game played on the beach next to the Pink Pony Pub, right in front of Phoenix All Suites.
From all of us to all of you, have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
See You on the Beach!!

November Fishing Report by Capt. Randy Boggs

The weather might be cooler, but the inshore fishing is “hot”. There have been good catches of red fish reported. These fish are showing up just north of the Perdido Pass Bridge on an incoming tide. Cut bait, live bait or trolling with spoons and Stretch 25s, with pink and green being the better colors, are the baits of choice.

Good catches of flounder are also being reported. The best catches are on jigs or bull minnows.

For catch and release, the public wrecks are a “hot” spot for red snapper. Trigger fish have shown up in abundance and are being caught on cut squid.
Remember, effective August 4, 2008, the size limit for gray trigger fish was increased to 14 inches, fork length.

Spanish and King mackerel are being caught on spoons trolling around the pass or just offshore. A smaller size spoon will produce a lot of Spanish mackerel.

There have been no reports of dolphin or wahoo being caught. Some large yellow fins tuna, over 100 pounds, are being caught trolling around the offshore rigs. Quite a few black fin tuna are being caught jigging with diamond jigs.

Grand Opening

This Thursday, I'll be attending the Grand Opening at Phoenix West. The Grand Opening will feature Alabama's two most famous Bobs... Beachin' and Governor Riley. According to the fine folks at Brett Robinson - "Phoenix West offers 25 floors of gorgeous three and four bedroom condominiums with over 1,900 square feet of living area. Each condo has spectacular Gulf front views." I can't wait to see it and take the tour. The 1.1 million square feet of condominiums were built on 60,000 square feet of concrete and 1,100 pilings. It's one of the state's largest buildings.
See You At Phoenix West and On The Beach!!

Cruising at $2.85

It's supposed to be a beautiful weekend on the Gulf Coast. Gas is down to $2.85 a gallon. Seems to me to be perfect conditions to fire up the Chevelle and take a scenic drive down Beach Boulevard on Pleasure Island. A quick trip down Highway 59, a left turn on Beach Boulevard and a cruise to the Florabama. Make sure you wave when I pass.

October Fishing Report by Capt. Randy Boggs

Red snapper are being caught in Florida waters out to 9 miles.Limits are common to 2 fish per person. Vermillion snapper are being caught on most of the larger reefs like the bridge rubble and barges and eve in shallow water 60’ to 70’ deep on cut squid. Trigger fish have shown up in big numbers and are being caught high in the water on cut squid on smaller hooks like 1 to 3 circle hooks.
A lot of red fish have been caught around the pass and in the bays. We have seen some really big catches of flounder on bull minnows, jigs, and Gulp!® baits. There have been black and yellow fin tuna being caught around the offshore rigs by trolling or jigging at night with diamond jigs.
We have seen quite a few wahoo caught in the last couple of weeks since the clear water has moved back in.We have even seen a few dolphins caught which is unusual this late in the season.

Eat That Shrimp!!

One of my favorite weekends of the year has arrived. It’s Shrimp Festival Weekend, and the Beachin’ Bob troupe assumes our customary role as unofficial visitor guides for the uninitiated. Our command post is located at Phoenix All Suites, as per the norm. It’s simply too convenient to be believed to walk from the hotel directly onto the Festival grounds. (For those who prefer a little quiet time between trips to the festival, try out Phoenix All Suites West, a short walk down the beach from the Festival.)

The food will be outstanding, and they’ve got some great music and activities.

Hidden Treasure - Baldwin County Heritage Museum

I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a hidden treasure - pun intended - this week with Ms. Beachin' and the boys. It's the Baldwin County Heritage Museum. It's a terrific little museum that's probably not as well known as it should be. It's right off of Hwy. 98, just outside Elberta. A short drive from anywhere on Pleasure Island. They currently feature an outstanding display from the sunken ship S.S. Republic, a Civil War era steamer. The display is amazing and the artifacts are unbelievable. It's a very enjoyable trip and I highly recommend it. Check them out online here.

September Fishing Report by Capt. Randy Boggs

Not all bad things come from hurricanes. With Hurricane Gustav it brought in clean water.

The red snapper are abundant on every reef and oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico including near shore. The natural bottom is holding trigger fish and vermillion snapper. We are seeing some grouper being caught in the 200’ depths.

Well offshore, the tuna fishing has been excellent at the oil rigs. There are reports of a lot of yellow fin tuna being caught in the 60 lb to 100 lb range. Several nice wahoo have been caught to the southwest around the oil rigs

Inshore the red fish bite has been better than ever seen. There have been several reports of over 100 fish being caught and released on a 4-hour trip. The speckled trout are being caught at night around the lights.

This is typical of the fishing in September. Everything is starting to feed anticipating the cooler weather when the bait will migrate out of here. The fishing is expected to get even better throughout the month.

Shrimp Festival

The National Shrimp Festival is slated for October 9 - 12. It's always a great time and this year should be no exception. From my post at Phoenix All Suites (right next door to the festival) I'll be taking in the sights, sounds, food and drink. This year's entertainment lineup includes: The Tip Tops, Joe Dee Messina, local favorite Brent Burns, rocking blues guitarist Wes Jeans, southern rock legends Molly Hatchet, and many more. Book early, it's usually a sell out. The food is awesome (don't miss the Cajun Pistols), the music is great and running on multiple stages, the vendor booths are interesting and unique. It's a can't miss event.
See you at the Beach!

P.S. This year's poster is a creation from my good friend Marjorie McCullough. If you see her at the festival, make sure you tell her Hi from Beachin' Bob.

Flowrider Competition

Waterville USA in Gulf Shores is the location for a Flowrider competition August 23–24. It’s called the 2008 Alabama Slamma. Admission is free and there will be more than 200 participants. What’s a Flowrider? According to Waterville: “The Flowrider is a simulated surfing/bodyboarding/snowboarding (snowboarding?? In Gulf Shores ???) on an endless wave. 40,000 gallons of water is pumped over a soft, trampoline style mat up a 5 foot incline to make the perfect endless wave.”

If you’ve never seen it, you should. These guys and gals are awesome at what they do.

Look for my Chevelle in the parking lot, and as always –

July Fishing Report by Capt. Randy Boggs

Offshore the waters have continued to stay muddy. Despite the muddy conditions, a few tuna are being caught at the rigs. A few rips have pushed up further offshore – 80 to 90 miles – with good catches of dolphin (mahi-mahi) and tuna fish. A few nice wahoo are being caught high speed trolling. There have been reports of two or three blue marlin being caught around the Nipple in the dirty water.

Bottom fishing is as good as it gets with good catches of red snapper and vermillion snapper. There are a lot of fish on the public reefs.Live pin fish or cigar minnows on a lighter leader (30 lb - 40 lb) will entice the fish on the public wrecks to bite.Several cobia have been caught around the oil rigs.

The dirty water has hampered the inshore fishing for trout. Red fish are showing up in fare numbers along the beaches and in the jetties. The Spanish mackerel and King mackerel are every where - the beaches, the pass, to well offshore.

Remember to have your venting tool and de-hooker on board. These items are now required by law.You must also use non-stainless steel circle hooks when fishing natural baits for reef fish.

On Monday, June 20, 3008, the Mobile Press Register reported that Conservation Commissioner Barnett Lawley officially extended red snapper season through October 31, 2008 in Alabama's 3-mile jurisdictional waters.

HOT TIPS!

It is better to use heavy monofilament (80 - 100 test line) for leaders when trolling for King mackerel rather than wire. Use a longer shank. You will loose a few fish to bite offs, but you will get way more strikes.

Fireworks, Lazy River and Chevelle

The Beachin’ clan will be perfectly positioned at Phoenix on the Bay II for the long 4th of July weekend. We’ll be arriving in my recent purchase, a 1971 Chevelle Malibu. (Note: for my fellow car enthusiasts: blue with white stripes, black interior, white bench split seat, 400 Turbo automatic transmission, 350 engine, Edelbrock carburetor. Sweet.). When not cruising Beach Boulevard in the ‘Velle, the Lazy River will be the preferred spot during the day (at least for me). We’ll head down to Gulf Shores in the Chevelle and take in the fireworks at the Hangout Friday night. Saturday night we’ll be partying with Montgomery Gentry at the Amphitheater in Orange Beach. I’m thinking Sunday will be a “wind down” day taking advantage of the grill and the Lazy River.

Hot Air Balloon Ride

I have always been fascinated with flying machines, from crop dusters to the Blue Angels. When I hear the drone of an airplane engine, I have to stop and look up. Hot air balloons intrigue me even more. Watching them float silently above the earth brings a smile to my face.

Brett/Robinson has been a sponsor for each of the four years of the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival in Foley. The event has grown each year and attracts balloonist from all areas of the country. The 2008 festival had 50 participants. As a sponsor, someone with the company has the opportunity to ride in a balloon. This year, I was the lucky one.

When I was asked if I would like to fly, my immediate answer was yes. Then, I was filled with conflicting emotions of excitement and dread. My flight was scheduled for Saturday evening. Before taking to the air, the pilots and sponsors were invited to a meet and greet Friday afternoon. I met the Brett/Robinson sponsored pilot, Gary Jones from Diamondhead, Miss. We talked briefly and agreed on a meeting time at the festival the next day.

Thunderstorms were scattered around the area mid-day Saturday, but the sky above Foley was clear by late afternoon and I met the pilot and his family at the festival. I was a little nervous as we waited on the pilot briefing. More rain had developed over Mobile Bay and it looked as if it was headed our way. After much discussion and weather watching, we postponed the flight until Sunday morning. I was to be at the festival grounds by 5:30 a.m. That gave me a little more time to anticipate the flight.

My alarm buzzed at 4:15 a.m. Sunday. I had just enough time to glance at the newspaper and drive from Orange Beach to Foley for my adventure. After breakfast and the pilot briefing, the decision was made to launch. To determine the wind direction, a helium-filled balloon was released. We watched as it floated through the different layers of wind currents. It looked like we were really going to fly. We took the truck and trailer with the balloon to a field southwest of the target landing area. It didn’t take long to get the basket (with a Brett/Robinson banner on the side) attached and the balloon inflated.

My pilot, Gary; his 8-year-old son Jeff; and I climbed in the basket and we started our ascent. The truck, trailer and crew were getting smaller by the second. The view was spectacular. I could see Mobile Bay to the west and the condominiums defining the start of the Gulf of Mexico to the south. I could easily identify Phoenix West and Phoenix West II, as well as condos as far east as Perdido Key. There was no sense of movement, only the ground moving below us. We were traveling with the wind, so there was no breeze in my face. The only sound was the release of propane to fire the burners that heat the air and the chatter of a slightly nervous 8-year-old.

The sky was filled with bright-colored balloons at various levels of flight and we all had the same goal, to land somewhere on or near the festival grounds. The winds shifted slightly to the south, so only a handful of balloons actually landed in the target area. Our balloon drifted near the target, but not near enough. Gary started looking for an open area without power lines to set the balloon down. By this time, balloons were landing all around the area southeast of the festival. We spotted an open lot in a neighborhood and as we came nearer to the tree tops, I could see people, some still in their pajamas, standing in their yards watching the invasion and waving. Our landing was a little rough. We hit the ground and bounced twice. Our crew arrived a few minutes after our landing. Other balloons landed in the same area and everyone helped to get all of the balloons packed and into their trailers. My adventure was over and I was back in my car and driving south before 8:30 a.m.

It was an experience I will never forget. Hopefully, some day I will get to float above the trees in a beautiful balloon again. Until then, I will keep looking up at the sound of an airplane engine and scanning the horizon for a balloon riding with the wind.

Show times are Tuesdays through Sundays at 8:00 PM, with a Sunday matinee at 2:00. The Missus and I have seen several of their productions and they are always well worth the time and modest admission fee.

June 2008 Fishing Report

Inshore, King mackerel and Spanish mackerel are being caught trolling along the beach. These fish are being caught on planers and spoons or a Mylar duster with a cigar minnow. For some reason, these fish seem to be holding two to three miles off the beach. Speckled trout are being caught around lighted piers at night with live shrimp.

The current offshore has been strong out of the west bringing green to brown water, and this has slowed the fishing some. Red snapper are being caught in all depths on cut bait or live pin fish. Vermillion snapper are being caught in 100’ to 120’ depths on cut squid. Quite a few grouper and scamp have been caught in the 200’ to 300’ depths. Trigger fish have been being caught on some of the pyramids placed by the World Champion Red Snapper Tournament high in the water on cut squid, not fishing on the bottom.

Offshore trolling has been slow due to the dirty water. A few black fin tuna are being caught on the offshore rigs jigging with diamond jigs. A few small yellow fin tuna are being caught by chunking around the offshore rigs. An offshore rip was reported earlier this week with a good catch of dolphin coming off of it.

Water temperature both near shore and offshore being reported at 81.5° to 82°.

Summer Begins At "The Top"

Summer kicks off on Pleasure Island this weekend with the Memorial Day weekend (as much as summer kicks off here, it’s basically summer all year). Friday night I’ll be attending the ZZ Top concert at the Wharf Amphitheater. I’ve seen the “Little Ole Band from Texas” several times in different venues and they always put on a good show. I’m sure this time will be no different. The opening act will be .38 Special, one of my all time Southern Rock favorites. Since we’ll be staying at Phoenix All Suites, we’ll certainly take the short walk to the new Hangout. On Memorial Day, we’ll head down to Fort Morgan to honor our fighting men and women and watch the staff fire their Civil War era cannon. It’s an incredible sight. Enjoy Memorial Day, and come visit us soon.

May Fishing Report by Capt. Randy Boggs

A few sheepsheads are being caught around the rocks and oil rigs in Mobile Bay. Trout are being caught with live shrimp in the bays around grass and the docks. Spanish and King mackerel are showing up in the inshore to near shore waters, and they are being caught trolling using planers and silver spoons.

Pompano are being reported in the surf. Some good catches have been landed lately. They are being caught on sand fleas and live or dead shrimp.

Black fin tuna are being caught around the offshore rigs at night either trolling or jigging. A few yellow fin tuna have been caught as well.

Vermillion snapper, trigger fish and white snapper are being caught in the 100’ plus depths on cut squid.

Red snapper season is now open in Florida waters. Most of the spots have been fished pretty hard, but nice catches are being landed on light tackle.

Several larger grouper have been caught in the 200’ – 300’ depths. We have seen a lot of grass lines with fresh weeds in them and some chicken dolphin around them. We have seen no catches of bigger dolphin or Wahoo. But, with the sunny weather that we have been having the water temperatures will quickly rise and the dolphin and Wahoo will begin to show up. Generally, the first dolphins are caught around Mother’s day.

The cobia migration is still moving through and some nice fish are being caught along the beach. We caught one last week of an offshore reef. So, if you are bottom fishing, keep an eye out around the boat because they are likely to show up anytime.

Water temperature both near shore and offshore being reported at 73°.

Family Reunion

Beachin’ Bob is bringing in the whole extended family for the Fourth of July weekend this year. Aunts, uncles, cousins, sisters, in-laws, the whole gang. We’ll be at Phoenix on the Bay II. It’s got a lazy river (which is perfect for someone like me who’s…well..let’s say uninspired to undertake rigorous activity while vacationing), wireless access throughout the building for blogging and web surfing, and a great view of Terry Cove and the Perdido Pass bridge. We’ll of course be renting a boat slip for the Beachin’ cruiser for our family boat rides. We’ll cruise to the Wharf to take in the fireworks and the Lee Greenwood concert on the Fourth. And follow it upwith the Montgomery Gentry concert on the 5th. We’ll even work in some beach time too, as we always do.

The Hangout Returns

Anyone who spent time in the summer in Gulf Shores in the 50’s and 60’s remembers the Hangout. Chiefly because the Hangout was the only place to be. The new Hangout is at the corner of Highway 59 and Beach Boulevard, just like the old Hangout. That area is affectionately known as “the T” to the locals. The new Hangout will be an open air restaurant and bar, with a big projection screen that will be showing beach and surfing style movies. The grand opening is May 2nd, the memories and good times will be flowing just like the good old days. I’ll be staying at Phoenix All Suites, a short walk from “the T”.

Fishing Report by Capt. Randy Boggs

Inshore the speckled trout our starting show up under the lights under the piers in the evenings and at night. The water temperature has risen to above 70 degrees, and the Spanish mackerel are starting to show up. They are being caught on planers with silver spoons.

The cobia fishing is starting to pick up. Several fish have been caught out of Orange Beach; mostly to the east.

The sheepshead fishing is as good as it gets. They bite the best on a rapidly moving tide. The best baits are live shrimp and fiddler crabs. They will also bite dead shrimp and cut shrimp.

Offshore, the first two wahoo of the season have been caught. A few king mackerel are being caught over the live bottom areas and larger wrecks. The vermilion snapper and white snapper bite in the 120’ water range has been excellent. The best results are with cut squid. A lot of black snapper are showing up and being caught higher in the water column at about 100’ to 120’ depths. They are biting whole or pieces of cigar minnows. A lot of catch and release red snapper are on almost all the structures in the Gulf and on the oil rigs.

If nothing changes with the guidelines, the Florida season will open April 15, 2008 and close October 31, 2008. From what we understand you must have a valid Florida license, possess no more than 2 fish per person, and not enter federal waters when in possession of red snapper. This means when you cross the Florida/Alabama line, you must be within 3 miles of the beach and when in Alabama waters all fishing tackles must be stowed and not readily available.

Please check to verify information before actually being in possession of fish. The contacts for Alabama and Florida are listed below.

It’s A Great Spring on the Coast

Spring is here and it’s the best to visit gulf Shores & Orange Beach. The weather is mild and the summer crowds haven’t arrived yet. So for me, it’s a perfect time for golf.

Saturday Brett and I played a round of golf at Rock Creek in Fairhope last Saturday as part of our Golf Package we got through Brett Robinson. We got a great deal on a round of golf and a condo on the beach. It was a short drive from condo to tee, less than an hour.

Sunday we played Cypress Bend at Craft Farms, an Arnold Palmer design. It’s a great layout, very player friendly. For lunch we headed out to Indigo Joe’s, the new sports bar at the Pinnacle. The food was awesome, and the big screens are perfect for keeping up with your favorite sporting events.

All in all, a great weekend.

Of course, we’ll be back soon for the fish flinging fun of the Mullet Toss.

See you at the Beach!!

March 2008 Fishing Report from Capt. Randy Boggs

Slowly but surely the water is heating up along with the fishing.

Inshore, the sheepshead are biting around the inlets, jetties and docks. The best baits are live shrimp or fiddler crabs. A few speckled trout are starting to show up. The surf fishing has been slow. This is sure to change when we get an east winds and an east tide.

Offshore, the vermillion snapper trigger fish and amberjacks are biting well in water in depths of over 100’.

We have not had any reports of the offshore fishing for tuna, dolphin or wahoo. We did see a boat coming in last week with tuna flags flying.

The first King mackerel have shown up in the last week.

Cobia season is just around the corner. The fist fish is generally caught around the 20th of March. The peak of the cobia migration will be here in late April to early May. Site fishing along the beach with live bait is the most popular way to catch these fish.

The Wharf Packs Them In

The Wharf has announced several top of the line acts for this spring. On Saturday March 1st, they’ll host country superstar Alan Jackson. I’m sure you’ll hear some songs from his soon to be released album “Havin A Good Time”. The next night, March 2nd, the Amphitheater will be rocking with Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin & Seether. I’ll be taking in that show accompanied by my son Brett. We’ll be staying at Phoenix on the Bay II, a short drive down Canal road from the Wharf. In April Widespread Panic will return to the Gulf Coast. After a very successful 2 show stand last year the band returns for 3 shows this year, April 18th – 20th.
It’s time book your Spring Break vacations, and a weekend (or week) at the beach or bay highlighted by a concert is a great way to kick off Spring.

February Fishing Report by Capt. Randy Boggs

The hot topic along the Gulf Coast seems to be about the new federal red snapper fishing regulations and the State of Florida’s decision not to follow the federal season.

Currently, the federal red snapper season will open June 1, 2008 and close September 30, 2008 with a recreational bag and possession limit of 2 fish per person per day. On for-hire vessels, the possession of recreational bag limit by captain and crew will be prohibited. Federal waters are beyond 9 nautical miles.

Recently, the State of Florida decided to open their red snapper season April 15, 2008 and close on October 31, 2008 with a recreational bag limit of 2 fish per person per day. Anglers must have a valid Florida fishing license to fish or to possess fish in Florida state waters (out to 9 nautical miles). If you have red snapper on board your vessel during the Florida red snapper season you may not venture into federal waters (beyond 9 nautical miles).

As far as we know, the State of Alabama red snapper season will follow the same dates and recreational bag limits as the federal season.

Before fishing, call to verify the season openings and possession laws. In Alabama contact the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources at 251-968-7576 and in Florida contact the Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 888-FISH FLORIDA.

All of the above information is either what we have read in the newspapers or have been told by word of mouth and could change at anytime.

Now the good news! Spring is here!

As the air temperature heats up so will the fishing. The first arrivals this spring will be sheepshead around the inlets, the jetties, the piers, and the seawalls. They readily strike live shrimp and fiddler crabs.

The next arrivals on the scene will be Spanish mackerel. From the shoreline, they bite best on white jigs and Gotcha lures. Anglers aboard boats will do well with Clark spoons, silver or gold, pulled behind planers. If the seas are rough do not worry about leaving the pass, lots of Spanish mackerel can be caught inside the rocks trolling and behind Ono Island if the water quality is good.

As the water temperature warms the speckled trout and flounder action will pick up. The best baits for these species are live shrimp, bull minnows, and jigs.

The bottom fishing is very good right now. Trigger fish are being caught in the 100’ plus depths. Vermillion snapper and white snapper are also biting well. Further off shore in the 200’ to 300’ depth, the grouper and the scamp are starting to show up with increasing regularity.

Tight lines,
Capt. Randy Boggs

It's Mardi Gras Time !!

It’s one of my favorite times of year on the Gulf Coast, Mardi Gras. From our perch at the fabulous new Phoenix 9, we’ll hit the streets for the parades for the next two weeks. There are parades in both Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, as well as the larger parades in Mobile (a short one hour drive to the home of the Original Mardi Gras). The festivities will peak on Fat Tuesday, February 5th. On Fat Tuesday we’ll catch the Gulf Shores Parade at 10 AM, followed by the Orange Beach parade at 1:30. There’s nothing like the view with a parade on one side and the beach on the other! After the parade we'll head down to Zeke's landing to catch a zydeco band.
See you at the Beach!!

January Fishing Report from Capt. Randy Boggs

Most people do not realize what a great time of year this is for fishing.

The sheepsheads are being caught inshore near the pier, the jetties and the rocks. They are biting fiddler crabs, if you can find them, and live shrimp as well as fresh cut shrimp. The trout can be found in the deeper holes of the rivers and the bays.

Reel Surprise left on a 4-hour charter on Tuesday afternoon and found that the vermillion snapper, white snapper and trigger fish were biting near shore. Many of these fishes were keeper fish.

In the 100’-130’ water depths vermillion snapper and trigger fish are being caught. There are a lot of red snapper being caught on the reefs for catch and release.

As for the big game fishing, there have not been any reports, as no on has been off shore.

Current water temperature: 60 nm out is 71.4° - closer to shore 61.7°.
